Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike were seen smiling after they met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The gathering included leaders from Ogoniland and was observed to potentially relate to ongoing environmental and political issues in Rivers State.

The presence of both Wike and Fubara, alongside Ogoni leaders, at the meeting appear to⁶ suggests an attempt at reconciliation or discussion of state matters under the mediation of Tinubu.

The New Diplomat reports that this comes as the political crisis in Rivers State involves a power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.

The crisis emerged post-2023 when Fubara’s administration began, with tensions escalating over control of the state’s political and resource structures.

A significant flashpoint occurred when 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Wike, attempted to impeach Fubara, leading to physical destruction, including the burning of the Assembly complex.

Following the protracted crisis, Tinub intervened multiple times, leading to peace accords that have seen mixed results.
