Culture, Religion, and Sensitivity: A Plea for Thoughtfulness By Johnson Babalola

By Johnson Babalola The music of Wale Glorious, the late Akure-born juju musician of the late 60s and early 70s, remains one of my all-time favorites. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has publicly stated that he will not provide support to his predecessor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara in his future political endeavours.

During an interview with Channels Television on Friday, Wike alleged that Fubara had made false statements about him.

The Minister levelled an accusation against Fubara, alleging ingratitude despite his efforts in assisting him in securing victory in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Rivers State.

Wike also denied making any financial demands from Fubara.

He said: “I will never support Fubara in my political life again. Anybody knows me, it’s not about me. People laboured to put up a structure.

“People laboured, you wouldn’t have even taken the 50th position. I sacrificed to talk to the Ogonis; I sacrificed to talk to several other people who let us go this way.

“You turned it that I am asking for N50 billion, N100 billion. You turned up lies against me, I brought you up, put you here. Today, I turned out to be over-demanding.

“In every political family, you run election under people and people believe that we are all together. We must have to keep our political structure.

“There is nobody that has ever said that you will kill your… Your rose through somewhere, why do you deny it? It’s unfair and you want me to sit down.”

When asked about his demands to Fubara, the FCT Minister said he only told the governor not to abandon the people who toiled hard for him to get to that position.

He added: “We are all humans, ingratitude is bad, it doesn’t matter what anybody can label it.”

The New Diplomat reports that Rivers State has been in the news over the past year following an acrimonious relationship between Wike and Fubara.

At the height of the crisis last year, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly threatened to impeach Fubara.
