More intrigues and power play have continued to unfold in Rivers State as Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) fight dirty for control of the political soul of the oil-rich state.

This is as Fubara declared that he is the ‘biggest loser’ in the forthcoming local government elections scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 5.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Fubara, however, insisted that the show must go on, with or without the platform that brought him to office.

He said: “In this election, I am the biggest loser; my party is not participating. But because of the Supreme Court ruling that there must be elected officials to manage the affairs of local government, as the governor, I have to obey that.

“What we are doing here is to make sure that even if my party is not participating, the council process must stand.

“A good number of people here are my party people… and you are not even benefiting from it and you are here supporting it. So, what is the problem?”

The New Diplomat reports that this is coming amid palpable tension in Rivers following the raging war and supremacy battle between Fubara, the incumbent governor of Rivers State and Wike, a two-term governor of Rivers State.

The battle has escalated to the upcoming local government election as the two heavyweights fight dirty for control of the grassroots.

It would be recalled also that all the caretaker committee chairmen believed to be loyal to Fubara are contesting the local government election under the platform of the Action Peoples Party (APP).

This move is believed to be part of Fubara’s alleged scheme to control the grassroots political base of Rivers State.
