A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has advanced reason why it granted the embattled former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT), DCP Abba Kyari, a two-week bail following an application.

The court in its ruling on Wednesday, held that the two-week bail is to allow Kyari to return home to conclude his mother’s burial rites.

Also, the court held that the determination of his bail application would be held on May 31.

It would be recalled that Kyari’s mother, Yachilla Kyari passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, and was survived by 10 children (five males and five females), including Abba, who is the eldest son.

The New Diplomat reports that the two-week bail comes after Kyari had spent over 27 months in detention.

The former IRT boss was arrested on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and has been fighting for bail.

In 2022, the Police Service Commission suspended Kyari and two senior police officers — Sunday Ubua and James Bawa — named in a cocaine deal involving the suspended deputy commissioner of police.
