The editor of the FirstNews Online Newspaper, Mr. Segun Olatunji has finally regained his freedom after two weeks in unknown custody.

Olatunji was picked up in his Lagos home in Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos. He was said to have been whisked away by 10 armed men.

It was gathered that he was released to the General Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, and the Deputy Editor (Nation’s Capital) of THE NATION Newspapers, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, under a bridge in Asokoro, Abuja.

Although details surrounding the abduction remain sketchy as of press time, reports said Olatunji was arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). He was said to have been picked up by the security agents on allegations of “terrorism”.

Since his abduction, families, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to activate the powers of his office as Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces to direct the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, to produce Segun.

The NUJ had condemned the abduction of Olatunji describing it as a threat to freedom of the press.
