By Femi Babafemi I have had the privilege of knowing Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) for about 30 years. As a young reporter, I observed from a working distance the metamorphosis of a military administrator who was unlike any other—an enigma committed as much to his work as to becoming a paragon of excellence…

Indigenes and residents of Alibuoba Quarters by Agbor Technical College, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State have been thrown into deep mourning following the untimely death of an unidentified person in a gully erosion.

Consequently, the residents have appealed to the State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa to come to their aid in addressing the recurring issue of gully erosion in the area.

This latest tragedy occurred barely three years after two teenagers of the same parents were washed away in the gully.

In June 2019, the victims, two teenagers of the same parents aged 15 and 17 years respectively were swept away by the ravaging flood occasioned by the gully erosion in the area.

In the latest incident, the lifeless body of the victim was seen lying deep down in the gully measuring over 50 feet deep and 30 feet wide along the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Road, beside Agbor Technical college.

According to accounts of the residents in the neighbourhood, their attention was drawn to the tragedy as a result of the offensive odour oozing out from the deep gully.

A resident who would not want his name in print disclosed that a closer revealed that the odour was from a fast-decomposing body.

There is presently a feeling of unease in the area as the residents have expressed concern about their safety due to the erosion problem which gets worsened during the rains just as over 20 buildings are currently under threat of caving in.

The Chairman, Landlords/Landladies Association in the Area, Comrade Chukwuyem Odia wailed that the erosion menace has continued to pose a serious challenge and danger to the locals, a situation which has made some of the residents relocate from the area.

Odia who called on relevant government agencies to come to their aid noted that determined efforts by landlords and residents in the area to tackle the erosion have not yielded any positive results as the problem is beyond their control.

He recalled that the association had severally reached out to some relevant authorities, particularly the member representing Ika South Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Festus Chukwuyem Okoh, House of Representatives member (Ika Federal Constituency), Mr. Victor Nwokolo, among others to come to their aid, yet nothing has been done.
