By Funke Egbemode Tola doesn’t wish anybody dead. She just doesn’t want to go through what her mother went through in the hands of her grandmother. She had been told that she might just be lucky and end up with a husband with a kind mother. But she’s scared, I believe, irredeemably, by the trauma…

The Dangote Group has pledged to cover the full medical expenses and provide compensation for Mrs. Ruth Otabor, who lost a leg after being struck by a truck linked to the company in Auchi, Edo State.

Otabor, the elder sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, was reportedly hit near Auchi Polytechnic on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, just six days after graduating from the institution.

Eyewitnesses had said the truck crushed her leg before it was intercepted by a bystander.

The accident has ignited a wave of outrage online, with the hashtag #JusticeForRuth trending across X, Instagram, and Facebook. Supporters and celebrities have joined calls for accountability, while some users alleged that unlicensed, inexperienced drivers are common among heavy-duty vehicle operators.

Phyna, who rose to fame in 2022 after winning the “Level Up” edition of BBNaija, has vowed to pursue justice for her sister, accusing the company of negligence.

However, in a statement released on August 14, 2025, the Dangote Group confirmed the incident and outlined steps taken since the crash.

“Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, together with our Insurance team, promptly visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement authorities, and visited the victim and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State.

“This action reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of those affected. We are ensuring full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation, in line with Dangote Group’s welfare policy.

“Our thoughts remain with Mrs. Ruth Otabor and her loved ones, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery,” the company stated.

The commitment comes amid mounting public pressure from both corporate and government action. Social media posts have questioned the designated driver’s licensing skills, road safety enforcement protocols, and the conduct of local authorities.
