Chief Frank Kokori, who was the former General Secretary of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and a foremost trade unionist that sparked a pro-democracy struggle to revalidate the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, is dead.
Chief Kokori died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 80 after his illustrious career as a trade unionist.
His death was disclosed by his personal assistant, Atawada Barry Oke.
It was gathered that the octogenarian prior to his death was diagnosed of a kidney ailment.
The ex-labour leader’s health condition deteriorated on Monday, making it impossible for him to communicate with the people around him, who with much sorrow placed him on life support.
Kokori’s death came barely a month after his plea of neglect despite his substantial contribution to the country’s democracy.
The Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as well as former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and representatives of NUPENG, visited him during his reported call of neglect.
