Eager to forestall further rumours of religious bias especially considering the contentious 2023 elections, the government of President Bola Tinubu has denied insinuations that the Aso Villa Chapel has been closed.
A number of social media platforms have claimed that the chapel, which is not as frequently used as the mosques there, have finally been closed down by the government.
However, a statement from the office of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, sent to select media houses Monday, urged the public to disregard the reports because they are fake news.
The wife of the president explained that the place is not vibrant because the chapel is awaiting the arrival of a new Chaplain after the exit of the last one.
The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been drawn to a story on social media about the purported closure of the AsoRock Chapel by the first lady; we wish to state categorically that this is a fabrication and a false representation of the true situation.
“The first lady at no time gave such directive that the chapel be shut nor asked for the keys to be handed over to her.
“Presently, there are weekly fellowship going on at the chapel including mid week fellowship on Tuesdays, however, Mr President is yet to appoint a Chaplain for the chapel after the exit of the last Chaplain as he only reserves the right to appoint a chaplain.’’
