The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has called for the immediate release of the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, who has been detained in the Department of State Service, DSS facility without charges.
SERAP in a statement on X platform, on Tuesday, said that it would proceed to court, if the Tinubu’s administration fails to release or charge Bawa with a legally recognizable offence.
While noting that Bawa’s continued detention violates his right to freedom, SERAP said the appropriate authorities should be prepared for lawsuit if they persist.
The statement reads, “The Tinubu administration must immediately release the suspended chairman of EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa from arbitrary detention or charge him with a legally recognizable offence.
“We’ll see in court if the authorities continue to flagrantly violate his right to liberty.”
It would be recalled that the Federal Government, FG, approved the indefinite suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.
A statement issued by the director of information in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, said the suspension follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
