South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced plans to meet United States President Donald Trump “soon” to discuss deteriorating South Africa-US relations.
Ramaphosa made this announcement in a statement posted on X on Thursday.
The South African President said he had a phone call conversation with Trump where they both reached a consensus to engage in person.
“We also spoke about the need to foster good relations between our two countries,” Ramaphosa said.
The announcement came as South Africa-US relations have hit a low point since Trump’s return to the White House in January.
It would be recalled that Trump has criticized South Africa’s Expropriation Law, which allows land confiscation without compensation in certain cases, claiming it targets white farmers. However, the South African government has since denied these allegations, calling them baseless.
Also, Trump’s administration expelled South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool after his critical remarks about Trump and the “Make America Great Again” movement, escalating tensions.
