The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has summoned an emergency session of the upper legislative chamber.

The emergency session, which will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, is said to be aimed at discussing issues of “national importance.”

This was contained in a memo signed by the Senate Clerk, Chinedu Francis Akubueze, and addressed to all senators.

The memo reads in part: “The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened.

“Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.

“We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause.

Thanks for your usual understanding.”

This emergency session is coming shortly after the National Assembly embarked on a seven-week recess.

While the specific agenda of the emergency session remains unknown, it comes amid the nationwide protests scheduled for August 1.

The New Diplomat reports that the nationwide protest has been gaining momentum on social media. Several individuals have vowed to storm the streets to demand an improvement in Nigeria’s economic situation.
