Fifteen days after celebrating his 100th birthday, former United States President Jimmy Carter participated in the US election by casting his vote on Wednesday.
The development comes after the former president had expressed his wish to support the US vice president and the Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, in the poll.
The Carter Center, a non-profit organization he founded after leaving the White House in 1981, confirmed that the former Democratic leader “voted by mail.”
The centenarian took advantage of early voting in his home state of Georgia, where he is currently receiving hospice care.
Carter had told his family earlier this year that living long enough to vote for Harris and help defeat her Republican rival, Donald Trump was more important to him than reaching his centenary.
The New Diplomat reports that Gabriel Sterling, a state election official had reported that as of Wednesday, more than 420,000 people have cast their ballots since early voting began on Tuesday in Georgia.
Meanwhile, the presidential election day is on 5 November.
It would be recalled that Carter served as president from Jan. 20, 1977, to Jan. 20, 1981. Carter’s post-presidency began in 1981 after he lost his reelection bid and he was just 56 then.
