There is a growing sense of unease and distress in Akwa Ibom as a group of suspected hoodlums has reportedly set fire on the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) office in Ibiatuk, Ibiono Ibom LGA of the state.

The development is coming amid ongoing local government elections across the 31 LGAs of the state.

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has confirmed the attack.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, revealed that hoodlums orchestrated the fire, “but thankfully, the electoral materials remained untouched, and the election continued as scheduled.”

He said: “Some hoodlums partially set the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom ablaze, but the election materials remained intact. The election is also ongoing.”

The New Diplomat reports that this development comes a few days after political parties, on October 3, signed a peace accord to ensure that there was no violence throughout the exercise in the state.
