Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 General Election, has commented on the potential merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead 2027 president polls.

In a recent media interview, Obi praised Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for indicating a possible support for him if the PDP would zone the 2027 presidential election to the South East.

However, the former Anambra State Governor noted that his primary concern is not personal ambition or political maneuvering, but rather the well-being of Nigeria and its people, according to reports.

He said: “I commend him and I’m grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if the presidential ticket goes to the South East. I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential.”

Weighing in on the possible merger between the PDP and LP, Obi reiterated that as long as the objective is to improve governance in Nigeria and unlock the country’s unlimited resources, he supports it.

Obi emphasized that he is not interested in forming mergers or alliances simply for the purpose of gaining power or winning elections.

“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it. If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it, I don’t want to be part of anything like that,” he asserted.

The former governor highlighted the significance of unity and collaboration among individuals and political parties, emphasizing that such efforts should be geared towards advancing Nigeria’s welfare.

He said: “It might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level, might be at any level, but we must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria.”
