The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has announced that the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition will place the welfare of Nigerians at the forefront of its agenda.

Obi, a two-term governor of Anambra State, emphasized the coalition’s commitment to delivering competent, capable, and compassionate leadership to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

The New Diplomat reports that the ADC coalition, unveiled on July 2, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, brings together prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

The coalition appointed former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, as interim National Chairman and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim National Secretary, signaling a strategic realignment to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

In a statement shared on X, Obi declared, “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.”

He stressed that the decision to adopt the ADC as the coalition’s platform was not taken lightly, stemming from “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s economic hardship, insecurity, and governance failures.

He added: “To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls, even when those bridges are uneasy.”
