In a move that has set political circles abuzz ahead of the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, held a marathon closed-door meeting with Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and a stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday.

The meeting, which took place at the Government House in Bauchi, has fueled speculation about a possible political cooperation or potential alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, a two-term governor of Anambra State reportedly arrived in Bauchi earlier in the day and was received at the airport by the Bauchi state’s Deputy Governor, Mohammed Auwal Jatau.

The two leaders thereafter drove to the Ramat House, where they engaged in marathon discussions behind closed doors for several hours.

While the details of their conversation remain unclear, political projections tend to indicate that it may signal early manoeuvres for a united opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The meeting comes at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is already heating up, with various factions and parties exploring coalitions to challenge the APC’s dominance in 2027.

The New Diplomat reports that Obi gained significant national support and goodwill during his 2023 presidential campaign for his focus on economic reforms and good governance issue.

On his part, Mohammed, a seasoned politician and current chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has been vocal about the need for a united front by the opposition to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship.
