The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Suru Local government area of Kebbi state, Bako Bala, has been reportedly assassinated by some suspected unnamed armed men.

This was revealed in a statement issued by Zaidu Bala, special adviser on television and radio to the Governor of Jebbi state, Governor Nasir Idris.

The Special adviser said Bala was killed at his residence.

The statement reads in part: “To Allah, we belong, and to Him, we shall return. Alhaji Bako Bala has died — APC chairman of Suru local government.

“He died after kidnappers kidnapped him and his family yesterday night where they shot him with a un. He died now at Medical Centre Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. May Allah have mercy on him.”

The New Diplomat reports that this comes amid a recent upsurge in banditry in parts of the North West region of Nigeria despite ongoing military efforts to address the long-standing issues of insecurity and instability in the area.

It would be recalled that on September 11, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) was reported to have successfully intervened to prevent a terrorist attack on Department of State Services (DSS) facilities in the Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger state.

The following day, armed assailants reportedly abducted numerous travellers along a highway in Zamfara.

On September 13, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) killed Kachallah Buzu, a notorious bandit kingpin, and several of his fighters, in Mayanchi village of the state.

On September 25, security operatives reportedly killed Kachalla Makore, a notorious bandit kingpin, and several of his fighters, in Magami area of Gusau LGA in Zamfara.
