A group of armed men on Tuesday, June 4, reportedly launched an attack on the Ohaukwu Police Division in Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State.

It was gathered that the assailants, who arrived in a bus, opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic in the surrounding area.

Although they managed to set fire to some police vehicles, the officers on duty bravely repelled the attack, preventing any loss of life.

The Chairman of Ohaukwu local government area, Prince Ikechukwu Odono, while confirming the incident, praised the swift response of the police officers.

According to reports, the assault on the police station also had a ripple effect, interrupting the distribution of relief materials by the Ohaukwu council chairman, Ikechukwu Odono, at the eadquarters located near the police station.

The palliative distribution was temporarily halted due to the chaos caused by the attack.

“Everyone, including the chairman of the council, ran for their life, to avoid injuries from the gunshots,” a source said.

No official statement has been released yet by the police in the state.

It would be recalled that last Thursday, May 30, suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) militants carried out an attack on military personnel, as the attackers were enforcing a sit-at-home order in the South East at the Obikabia Junction checkpoint, in Obingwa local government area, adjourning Aba metropolis in Abia State.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that five of its personnel were killed by the militants.
