6 Injured As Cameroonian Gendarmes Invade Nigerian Community

0

The police in Cross River on Monday said that six residents of Danare community in Boki Local Government Area were shot by gendarmes from Bodam community during an invasion on  the Nigerian territory by Cameroonians.

Mr Hafiz Inuwa, the Commissioner of Police, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.

He said that a Cameroonian community, `Bodam’, on the border with Nigeria’s Boki Local Government Area, had been in crisis with Danare community over the international land dispute.

Inuwa said after visiting Danare community that although no life was lost, six residents of Danare community were shot by the Cameroonians.

“We found out that six persons were shot and they are currently in the hospital as the pellets were being removed from their bodies.

“They were shot by the people of Bodam village from Cameroon. We have advised the people to restore normalcy and shun all forms of crisis and allow the government to take charge.

“They told us that they were preparing to repel the attack because the Cameroonians had encroached almost 43km into their land,’’ he said.

The commissioner further explained that the Danare people were appealing to the government to restore electricity, drinking water, communication and police post in the area.

Dr Itam Abang, the member representing Boki I State Constituency in Cross River House of Assembly, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that over 1,000 cocoa, plantain and banana farms were also destroyed by the Cameroonians.

Itam said majority of residents in the area were mainly farmers and appealed to the Federal Government to intervene by providing the people with adequate security and social amenities.

“When we got there, the Danare people had already mobilised for war. Luckily, we arrived on time in company with the commissioner of police and we had to prevail on them not to go into the forest.

“From where we were standing, we could hear gunshots because the Cameroonians had really encroached into the Danare community.

“And from what my people told me, the Cameroonians have destroyed over 1,000 of their farmlands and this is a huge loss to the farmers.

“We advised residents in the community to hold their peace that the state and Federal Government were going to step in with a view to restoring peace and normalcy in the area,’’ she said.

Russia: Saraki Presides Over Session At IPU

President of the Nigerian Senate Dr Bukola Saraki presiding over a session of the 137th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Russia

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki on Monday, presided over a session at the ongoing 137th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The session chaired by Saraki was a debate which focused on ending the grave humanitarian crisis, persecution and violent attacks on the Rohingyas as a threat to international peace and security.

The session also deliberated on ensuring the unconditional and safe return of the Rohingyas to their homeland Myanmar.

Saraki presided over speakers of parliaments from many countries who are participating in the 137th IPU.

Nigeria is one of the countries faces with humanitarian crisis with the North Eastern part of the country still suffering grave crisis as a result of the activities of the violent group, Boko Haram.

On Sunday, while making a presentation during a general debate, Saraki called for international conference on the North East and Boko Haram threat in Nigeria.

According to him, convening an international conference like the ones convened in London on Somalia and Syria, would go a long way in finding lasting solution to the problem in the region.

“Nigeria’s North East region has suffered terribly  under  the onslaught of Boko Haram insurgents.

“Two million Nigerians are internally displaced or have fled to neighbouring countries like the Lake Chad region, where 4.4 million people are threatened by food insecurity.

“Of the funds needed to address the problem, less than half has been raised. The United Nations has called the situation in the Lake Chad region the most neglected humanitarian crisis in the world.

“The 8th National Assembly is at the forefront of improved coordination efforts to overcome institutional and logistical impediments in the way of getting aid for those in need.

“We have reached an advanced stage in the plans for a development commission to tackle the crisis in the North East, incidentally the region   with the highest poverty rate in the country.

“We have also made economic growth and greater  investment  the core of our legislative agenda.

“The sooner we deliver economic reforms and greater prosperity to all Nigerian, the sooner we can achieve a more inclusive society and minimize societal divisions and grievances,’’ he said.

The 137th IPU has as its theme: “Promoting Cultural Pluralism and Peace through Inter-Faith and Inter-Ethnic Dialogue”.

Saraki expressed optimism that the 137th IPU would offer a lasting solution to the growing world conflicts.

Initially, the organization was for individual parliamentarians, but has since transformed into an international organization of the parliaments of sovereign states.

Zuma’s Statue In Imo Causing Uproar As Fani-Kayode, Group Lambast Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has come under heavy criticism for erecting a statue of South African President, Jacob Zuma in the heart of Owerri, the state capital, as former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode on Monday joined other Nigerians to take the Governor to the cleaners.

In a tweet on his official handle, Fani-Kayode said: “Nigerians are murdered by South African security forces every day yet the clown in Imo state builds a statue in honor of Pres. Zuma.

“Igbos are murdered by Nigerian security forces every day yet that same clown in Imo state continues worship @MBuhari.

“Slavery is a curse!” Fani-Kayode tweeted.

Zuma being presented with honorary award by Okorocha

Zuma, who is facing multiple accusations of corruption, fraud, and money laundering in his country, arrived Imo State on a two-day working visit on Friday.

While in Owerri, he also bagged the chieftaincy title ‘Ochiagha’ (Warlord).

Similarly, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) has described as “embarrassing” the visit and honour converred on Zuma by the Imo State governor.

CSNAC’s Chairman, Mr. Lanre Suraj said in a statement on Sunday said the honour bestowed on Mr. Zuma would embolden the president to tell his people he is celebrated abroad.

According to a statement by the South African government, Zuma was in Owerri, the Imo State capital, to “strengthen socio-economic relations and further deepen existing cooperation in the field of education.”

“Apart from allowing Mr. Zuma to address a group of selected secondary school students and other young people, Governor Rochas Okorocha directed a traditional ruler in Imo State to confer a chieftaincy title on him.

“It is embarrassing that a state government controlled by the All Progressives Congress which is fighting corruption could play host to Mr. Zuma, allegedly a corrupt leader in the current assembly of heads of state in the African Union and portray him as a hero before a group of African youth,” Suraj lamented.

He continued: “Is Governor Okorocha not aware that Mr. Zuma has been found guilty of corruption by the courts in South Africa and has been ordered to refund the $500,000 stolen from the public treasury to expand his private house to accommodate his many wives?

“Is Governor Okorocha not aware that Mr. Zuma has also been indicted for allowing an Indian family to influence the appointment of his cabinet members?

“In asking President Zuma to address officials of Imo State government, is Governor Okorocha not aware that the people of South Africa are currently demanding for the resignation of a leader who has brought shame and dishonour to the country of Nelson Mandela?”

It would be recalled that last year, a South African Court ruled that Zuma violated the constitution by using public funds to upgrade his private residence, leading to the president apologizing to his countrymen.

Just last Friday, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Mr. Zuma must face prosecution over almost 800 charges of corruption relating to an arms deal in the 1990s.

“Though we recognize the federal government’s position on not hosting President Zuma in Abuja as his visit would have questioned the anti-corruption policy of President Buhari,” said Mr. Suraj.

“All the same, the federal government should have called Governor Okorocha to order and advise him not to celebrate corruption. Since Governor Okorocha is part of the APC-led government with mantra of zero tolerance for corruption, he must tender a public apology to the people of Nigeria for promoting President Zuma who has been adjudged to be a corrupt leader by the South African judiciary.

Among those who welcomed the South African president at the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri alongside Governor Okorocha were; former president, Olusegun Obasanjo; former Jigawa State governor, Saminu Turaki; and Maurice Iwu, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

No $25bn Is Missing In NNPC, Presidency Backtracks

The Presidency on Sunday said no contracts worth 25 billion dollars were awarded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

It also said that 25 billion dollars was iinot missing in the corporation.

Mr Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, stated this in a statement in Abuja.

According to him, no contracts were procured by the NNPC based on the leaked memo of Petroleum Resources Minister of State, Ibe Kachukwu, even though such impressions have been maliciously created in the past few weeks.

Akande disclosed that a close look at each of the said projects indicated clearly that “these are not procurement contracts”.

He said “when I tweeted on Thursday morning, I had indicated that the Vice President, while acting as President approved Joint Venture Financing arrangements.

“But for some curious reasons, a few media reports used that tweet to report that I said the then Acting President approved N640 billion worth of oil contracts.

“Such reporting is both false and misleading and therefore, ought to be completely ignored by all seekers of truth.”

He added that what was more important was “when you look diligently at the referenced projects/transactions one by one, you will see, as NNPC has shown, that none of them was actually a procurement contract”.

“Take the Crude Term Contract and the Direct Sale, Direct Purchase (DSDP) agreements, for instance, these are not procurement contracts involving the expenditure of public funds.

“Both transactions are simply a shortlisting process in which prospective off-takers of crude oil and suppliers of petroleum are selected under agreed terms, and in accordance with due process.

“It is therefore wrong and misleading to refer to them as though they’re contracts involving the expenditure of NNPC funds, or public funds of any sort,’’ he added.

The vice presidential spokesman recalled that the Petroleum Minister himself had in fact, clarified that he meant “to focus on administrative and governance issues, not red-flag any fraud, because no fraud exists in this matter.”

For both transactions, Akande reiterated that there was falsehood and also inaccurate to attach 10 billion dollars and five billion dollars values on them.

“Attaching monetary values to these contracts is an arbitrary act that completely distorts understanding of the situation.”

He said Nigerians should be informed clearly that whenever there was monetary value on any crude oil lifted in the country, “the proceeds go directly to the Federation Account and not to any company.

“In fact, the Buhari administration in the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), has closed down multiple NNPC accounts in order to promote transparency and probity.”

Akande also explained that in compiling the shortlist for prospective off-takers of crude oil and suppliers of petroleum under agreed terms, “there were public placements of advert in the mass media seeking Expressions of Interest.

“Bids were publicly opened in the presence of NEITI, DPR, BPP, Civil Society groups and the media; in some cases even, these events were televised live.”

“For the sake of emphasis, let me state clearly that both the Crude Term Contract and the Direct Sale and Direct Purchase agreements are not contracts for any procurement of goods, works or services,’’ he stated.

Akande said it was important to “set the records straight that the list of approved off-takers does not carry any financial values but simply states the terms and conditions for the lifting and supply of petroleum products”.

He also said that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Contract was a contractor-financed job, which had not been finalized or awarded.

According to him, it is still making its way to the Federal Executive Council.

The presidential aide noted that there were also three presidential approvals given on Joint Venture financing arrangements, meaning loans to cater for cash-call obligations.

“One of these was okayed by the President in 2015, and two by the then Acting President in 2017,” he explained.

On Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Akande said “there is no contract in the three billion dollars to four billion dollars range as reported in some media.

“You can then see from the foregoing that the 25 billion dollars being bandied in the media does not exist. There is no 25 billion dollars missing.”

How State House Clinic Got N1.9bn In 3 Years

0

Mr Jalal Arabi, the Permanent Secretary, State House, has refuted media report suggesting that the State House Medical Centre (SHMC), had received N11.01billion as appropriation for the period 2015-2017.

Arabi’s refutal is contained in a statement by Mr Attah Esa, the Deputy Director, Information in the State House, Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, out of the total capital appropriation of N2.9billion and recurrent appropriation of N465.9million for the period under reference, only the sum of N969.6million (representing 32.97%) for Capital and N225.5million (representing 48.41%) for recurrent was actually released.

He also revealed that there was zero capital allocation for the Medical Centre in 2017, while out of the N331.7million being recurrent appropriation for 2017, the actual amount released up to September was N91.3million, representing 27.5 per cent.

The Permanent Secretary emphasised that the above figures were verifiable from the Ministries of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

He observed that, “during the three-year period under review (indeed two years since no capital allocation for 2017), and despite the shortfalls between budgetary provisions and actual releases, the Centre continued to provide free services to the over 10,000 registered patients annually.

He added that the Centre had also continued to execute on-going projects.

Giving further insight into the scope of the Centre’s clientele, Arabi stressed that apart from the Presidency, other beneficiaries of the free services include political appointees, the military, para-military, other security agencies, members of the National Assembly, and the general public.

He said: “Considering the unrestricted patronage base and free services of the State House Medical Centre, coupled with the funding hiccups and periodic receipts, it may not be far-fetched to notice gaps between demand and supply of medical equipment and consumables at certain stages of the budget circle.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State House Medical Centre has come under serious criticisms, from different quarters, over lack of drugs and equipment at the facility.

The House of Representatives, had on Oct. 12, inaugurated an ad-hoc committee to investigate the condition of the medical centre.

The house set up the committee following a motion raised by Henry Archibong (PDP-Akwa Ibom) at the plenary on Thursday, alleging that despite huge budgetary allocations, the clinic lacked necessary facilities, drugs and other consumables.

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Oct. 9, had criticised the management of the facility, and called for a probe of the Centre.

She lamented the poor state of health facilities in the hospital despite the huge budgetary allocation to it.

However, Arabi, in an earlier statement on Oct. 2, said the State House Medical Centre, would be commercialised and repositioned to offer qualitative and efficient services.

Edo farmers to Cultivate 250,000 Hectares of Land in 2 years – Obaseki

…harps on modern farming methods

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has disclosed that the goal of his administration in the next two years is to ensure that farmers in the State cultivate a minimum of 250,000 hectares of farmland.

Obaseki said this on Saturday at the 13th Esan Economic Empowerment Workshop, with the theme: “Modernising Agri-business in Esan Land for Economic Empowerment,” organised by the Association of Esan Professionals.

He explained that agriculture is at the centre of the economic reconstruction programme of the Federal Government as well as Edo State government due to the sector’s potential to create millions of jobs.

“This initiative is in line with my administration’s commitment to create 200,000 jobs for Edo people, which we promised during our electioneering campaign,” the governor said.

He said agriculture is being embraced in Edo State due to the incentives his administration is providing to make access to land, fertiliser and other inputs easy for farmers.

He further said that his administration has revamped the Edo fertiliser plant in Auchi to enable farmers have same type of fertiliser after proper examination of the soil to ensure healthy crop production.

“We have equally revamped the College of Agriculture in the state to train our farmers and help them with the required knowledge to grow healthy agricultural products for export.”

Obaseki said the Gelegele Sea Port is another important project that will help in the export of finished agricultural products.

He urged the youths to embrace agriculture as his administration is creating the enabling environment for large scale farming, easy access to land and improved seedlings.

“Agriculture is now scientifically done and mechanisation will help us compete in the international agricultural market.”

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbe, congratulated the organisers of the workshop and pledged the support of the federal government for their programme.

The Minister who was represented by the State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Edo State Office, Omoragbon Wellington, assured that the Federal Government would support the group in the area of capacity building and supply of processing machines at subsidised rate.

The president of the Association of Esan Professionals, organisers of the workshop, Barr. Mathew Egbadon, said the association was established with the sole objective of serving as a non- political platform for the Esan people to contribute their quota to the development of Esan land.

He said the association has established Esan Education Trust Fund to assist indigent students in accessing quality education.Egbadon said the association is focusing on agriculture because Esan people have

Egbadon said the association is focusing on agriculture because Esan people have comparative advantage in the sector with the vast land available for farming.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of a cash gift of N500, 000 to three schools for coming tops in a quiz competition organised to test their proficiency in Esan language.

The cash reward was to encourage proficiency in Edo languages in line with the state government’s resolve to promote Edo culture.

Corrupt Practices: APC Leaders Call For Impeachment Of Okowa

The Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC) Leaders Council has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Delta State House of Assembly to commence processes for the immediate impeachment of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over alleged corrupt practices.

Addressing reporters over the weekend at Agbor, headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of the state, the council said Mr. Okowa has looted the state treasury while ignoring the needs of the people of Delta State.

Speaking on behalf of the council, its coordinator, Cairo Ojougboh, said the two-week ultimatum to the state legislature to kickstart the impeachment process became imperative as the state was no longer progressing infrastructurally despite all the billions of naira that have accrued to the state since Governor Okowa took office.

Displaying some documents from the Delta State House of Assembly before the media, Mr. Ojougboh, a former presidential aide who was flanked by other leaders of the APC, stated, “I gave the Delta State House of Assembly 48 hours to produce a signed copy of the 2017 budget. Ten days after, the House has not been able to produce a copy of a budget that was passed on Wednesday, 1st February, 2017.”

He continued, “Okowa dips his ugly, sticky and wicked fingers into the state treasury, which is now his pocket, to run Delta State as out-of-pocket expenses. The 2017 DESOPADEC budget is nonexistent and we hereby call on the members from the oil producing areas to produce the budget for their constituents to peruse. The governor of Delta State awarded to himself an approval limit of N250,000,000. He then uses four memos to corner one billion naira for his personal use.

“The State Executive Council approved this fraud for him. The commissioners do not have mandate for any approval whatsoever, not even for ten naira. Delta State House of Assembly is aware of this fraud and will do nothing about it. Even in Ibori and Uduaghan administrations, the governor’s approval limit was N50 million naira. We call on the state legislature to quickly address these anomalies otherwise there will be no Delta in 2019.

“The over twenty billion naira refund released by the federal government has vanished. Okowa released 50 percent as commission to the so-called consultant, his family member, and converted 50 percent to foreign exchange to finance his super ranch in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and his housing estate in South Africa. The bailout was never used for payment of salary arrears. It was completely stolen by Okawa and family.

“Pensioners have now habitually turned Asaba to a protest ground on a daily basis. They are owed two years’ arrears. The money meant for their payment has been mismanaged, misappropriated, misapplied and embezzled. The Nigeria Labour Congress bidded N2 billion to purchase 51 percent of Delta Line. But Okowa sold 60 percent of the company for N161 million, while owing workers twelve months’ salaries. We call on the state legislature to annul the sales and investigate this heinous crime,” the APC Leaders Council stated.

In a similar vein, the senator representing Delta Central under the APC in the National Assembly, Ovie Omo-Agege, has accused Governor Okowa of looting the state treasury to a stand still.

Mr. Omo-Agege, who made the allegation on Saturday during a press briefing in his hometown of Orogun, Ughelli North LGA, challenged Mr. Okowa to respond to the allegation of running the state with a blank budget by showing the real copy of the budget to Deltans rather than raining insults on the accusers.

According to the senator, Governor Okowa has failed the people of Delta State by mismanaging billions of naira from the monthly federal allocations as well as the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Saturday in Lagos tasked officers of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps (NAFC) on conduct, professionalism and hard work as he inaugurated the Data Recovery Centre.

Buratai was represented by the Chief of Training and Operations, Maj.-Gen. David Ahmadu, during the inauguration of the data recovery centre at the Nigerian Army Finance Corps, Apapa, Lagos.

According to him, the Nigerian Army in recent times is being faced with many challenges ranging from militancy, insurgency, kidnapping and all forms of crimes across the country.

“I implore you not to rest on your oars. Conduct yourselves within the ambit of the Rules of Engagement,” he said.

Buratai said the corps had been able to manage its scarce resources, adding that the troops at the various theatre of operations have been getting their allowance monthly.

“I commend the Acting Chief of Accounts and Budget, Brig.-Gen. Jehadi Jakko and am happy to inaugurate the remodelled NAFC complex, the data recovery centre and gymnasium.

“This is in line with my administration towards maintenance culture and provision of critical infrastructure.

“As you are aware the army has keyed into all reforms in line with constituted authorities.

“Some of this include; implementation of the treasury single account and Integrated Payroll Personal Information System (IPPIS),” he said.

Buratai also commended the NAFC for its role in administration of troops, allowances, especially in the support of troops in the north-east.

Earlier, Brig.-Gen. Jakko, during his address of welcome, thanked the Chief of Army Staff for his support since his assumption of office.

He said that the corps was saddled with the payment of salaries  of troops and other allowances amongst other things.

He said the Nigerian Army was already implementing all government financial reforms, adding that it had been helpful in its finances.

The Command and Warrant Officers Mess was also inaugurated and was witnessed by many senior officers.

Liberia Poll: Weah, Boakai Likely To Go For Run-Off

0

Former football star George Weah and incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai on Saturday edged closer to competing in a run-off vote for Liberia’s presidency, with three quarters of polling stations counted.

Weah now commands 39.2 percent of votes cast and counted while Boakai has taken 29.6 percent, the chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) Joseph Korkoya told journalists in Monrovia.

If no single candidate gains more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off will be scheduled in November between the top two contenders, according to Liberian law.

Whoever wins the vote will take over power from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who has served a maximum two terms and is stepping down after 12 years.

Although Weah strengthened his lead over Boakai from partial results released on Friday, further increasing his vote margin by more than 10 percentage points would be a significant challenge.

The NEC said 1,193,331 votes have been counted so far, with turnout at 74.35 percent, a trend which means that Weah would need to win a majority in almost all the remaining districts in a nation of 2.18 million registered voters.

As things currently stand in Liberia Poll

The pair are well clear of the 18 other candidates, though longtime opposition leader Charles Brumskine took 9.7 percent of votes counted and Coca-Cola executive Alexander Cummings is on 6.9 percent, meaning the role of their supporters will be significant if a run-off is called.

Weah is ahead in 12 of Liberia’s 15 counties including Montserrado, its most populous, while Boakai leads in two including his home county Lofa.

Boakai said earlier Saturday he was still confident of winning without the need for a second round vote.

“I am sure of winning the first round,” he told journalists. “If there is second round we will go for it but I am sure of being the winner at the end of the day,” he added.

NEC chairman Korkoya also said he had ordered a re-run in the town of Dulay, where a presiding officer was allegedly caught stuffing extra ballots by an observer after polls had closed.

The polling official was now in custody, Korkoya said, but the total of final results of the election will not be known until polling in the area is completed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile counting in legislative elections also held last Tuesday is only 30 percent complete.

…As Okpe Youths Endorse Him For Council Chair

By John Oghojafor

Certainly not the wealthiest in Sapele but his name rings a bell among the needy, the helpless, the hopeless, the less privileged and the physically challenged.  There is milk of human kindness running in his blood and he just cannot sit by watching someone nearby in need without making effort within his capacity to offer help.  Indeed, the name has become a brand among the youths, the women and the aged in the ancient city of Sapele.

He is Mr. Eugene Inoaghan, and accomplished and successful business man, a rubber merchant of no mean repute, a committed PDP chieftain and of course, the PDP chairmanship candidate for Sapele Local Government Council election.

Doing what he knows how best, he recently gathered some widows and less privilege in Sapele and decided to put smile in their faces.  The times are hard and even the rich who have more than enough for themselves go into hiding for fear of the unknown, but certainly not so with Inoaghan.  He strongly believes that God is the giver of wealth and the divine purpose is to better the lives of as many as need assistance.

Beneficiaries of Inoaghan’s Empowerment Initiative

So, when he gathered the widows and less privileged in Sapele, it was no surprise because he has been into the business of reaching out to people for over three decades.  He gathered the women in Okpe Hall in Sapele recently where he handed envelopes containing N20,000 each to enable them engage in petty trading and farming to assist themselves and their children.

Their joy knew no bound as the beneficiaries involuntarily engaged themselves in a prolong prayer, asking God to bless and enlarge the coast of Mr. Eugene Inoaghan for showing compassion to them.  They danced and praised God for using Inoaghan to address their problems.

Advising the women to be prudent with the little they have gotten, Mr. Inoaghan stated that if properly managed, the beneficiaries could turn the money around in their small scale trading businesses and with God’s blessing they could become great with it.

Those who benefitted from the Mr. Inoaghan empowerment include Mrs. Christiana Umukoro, Mrs. Oserada Queen, Mrs Stella Umeboro, Mrs Donorene Freeborn, Mrs. Otutu Edna, Mrs. Rachael Mene, Mrs. Stella Udugadi Mrs. Felicia Akama, Mrs. Eunice Cleverly Mrs. Esther Eretomi among others.

Meanwhile, the executive of Okpe Youths Council, Sapele Local Government chapter have adopted Mr. Eugene Inoaghan as the PDP flag bearer for the chairmanship of the Council in the forthcoming Local Government election slated for January 6, 2018.

The youth who paid a solidarity visit to Mr. Inoaghan in Sapele recently, was led by the Coordinator, Comrade Eseoghene Mebradu.  Others in the entourage include coordinators from five districts that make up the Local Government chapter.  They are Comrade Ajuya David from Ozue district; Comrade Efe Akpomiemie Harrison from Amukpe district; Comrade Efe Abeke from Sapele district, Comrade Sunday Akpolo from Ugborhen district and Comrade Peter Pemu from Elume district.

In his remarks, Inoaghan thanked the youth body for the confidence they have reposed in him, assuring that if elected as the next chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, he will do his best to carry everyone along and attract development to the area.

In a related development, Sapele-based philanthropist and PDP chieftain, Mr. Eugene Inoaghan has donated several books and writing materials to students of Eziafa Grammar School, Amukpe, Macedonia Baptist School and Ethiope Primary School, all in Sapele.

Addressing  the principal, teachers and students in Ezeafia Grammar School, Mr. Inoaghan disclosed that the donation was just a token from him to assist the students in learning, urging the teachers to put in their best in the education of the children, adding that in so doing they are building a strong nation.

Inoaghan also advised the students to take their studies seriously in order to justify the assistance they are getting now, adding that the future of the nation belongs to them.

Teachers and pupils in the respective schools expressed joy for the donation as they danced and praised the PDP chieftain for his kind gesture, praying God to bless him and his family abundantly.

He also instituted a scholarship scheme for the best students in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry and agricultural science, urging the principal to get him the names of such students who will benefit from the scholarship scheme.

Oputa To Spend 3 Years In Houston Jail

0

Nigerian Wiseman Oputa, living in Texas, United States has been jailed for three years by a federal judge in Houston.

The 25-year-old had pleaded guilty to a $1.3million wire fraud in April, using fake passports and romance schemes.

Investigators said Oputa used counterfeit passports to open bank accounts in the Houston area. The passports had his photo but different names and identification.

Prosecutors said he then then lured online victims into sending money to those accounts.

The scams ranged from bogus business deals and romance offers to false reports of money won and taxes needing to be paid to acquire the winnings.

Along with restitution, Oputa also will face deportation proceedings when he leaves prison.

Here was the statement issued by US Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Texas, outlining the case against Oputa:

A 25-year-old Nigerian man who was residing in Houston has pleaded guilty to perpetuating a wire fraud scheme involving various Internet scams, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez.

Wiseman Oputa pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2016, until Jan. 25, 2017, Oputa used counterfeit passports to open bank accounts in the greater Houston area. The passports contained photographs of Oputa but had different names and identification information. He then worked with others to lure victims into sending money into these bank accounts. These funds were obtained through a variety of internet scams, including business email compromise, romance schemes and unauthorised intrusions into company email accounts. Checks or wire transfers were then sent from the company’s accounts payable to accounts Oputa or others controlled. Oputa would then use the counterfeit passports to retrieve the fraudulently obtained funds.

In one instance in December 2016, Oputa opened an account at Regions Bank with a counterfeit Ghanaian passport as identification. Shortly thereafter the account received a wire transfer of $40,000 from a victim who had been told to send money for taxes on money he had won in Spain. USAA Bank identified the fraudulent and was able to recal the wire.

U.S. District Judge Alfred H. Bennett accepted the guilty plea and has set sentencing for July 6, 2017. At that time, Oputa faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. He will remain in custody pending that hearing.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation along with Department of State – Diplomatic Security Service and the Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Elmilady is prosecuting the case.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday assured stakeholders from the South East that the region will benefit more from roads and coastal rail projects, which are of critical importance to the economy.

Speaking at an audience with leaders from the region led by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, the President declared that 2nd Niger Bridge, the East-West Road and the Coastal rail project, are receiving utmost attention from his administration.

The President said counterpart funding from the Chinese government would substantially fund these projects, which when completed will improve the welfare, well-being and economy of the people in the region.

”I know the Chinese are very competent in handling such projects and we will ensure that we get the money for the projects to take off”.

”I thank you for articulating your demands and I want to assure that we are doing our best for the country. If we can stop people from stealing, then there will be more resources to put into projects that will create employment for Nigerians,’’ the President said.

Responding to allegations of under-representation of Igbos in his government, the President said: “ I gave south-east four substantive ministers in the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Investment, Science and Technology and Labour.

”Seven states in the North got Ministers of State and of the two Ministries headed by your sons, I cannot take any decision on foreign policy and investments without their input,’’ he said.

The President also promised the leaders, comprising governors and ministers from the region, the President of Ohaneze, Chief Nnia Nwodo and representatives from the National Assembly, that he will visit states in the zone soon.

”I want to assure you that I came into government with a clear conscience and I will also leave with a clear conscience,’’ he said.

Earlier, the President of Ohaneze, while articulating the demands of the zone to the President highlighted the issue of state creation, restructuring, federal projects in the South East namely Enugu-Onitsha road, Enugu-Port Harcourt road and Aba-Ikot-Ekpene road, among others.

Nwodo also demanded urgent presidential interventions on the Enugu Airport, reticulation of the gas-pipelines in the South East and the standard gauge plan for railway construction.

Commending the President’s remarkable achievements on security and the fight against corruption, Nwodo declared: “we are ready to work with you. We are determined to work with you. We know you are a decisive leader and we know God will continue to give you the wisdom to govern Nigeria.’’

Also speaking, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State expressed satisfaction on the outcome of their discussions with the President on critical issues and topics affecting the region.

“You have no hatred for any state. You have treated all states with equality. What one state gets in the north, the other gets in the south,’’ the governor said, referring to budget support facility and stabilisation fund released to states and local governments since the inception of the administration.

Anyaoku, Obaseki Give Conditions for Nigeria’s Restructuring

0

Former Secretary General of the Common Wealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, says that Nigeria will fare better if the on-going call to restructure the country into regions is adhered to.

Anyaoku gave this view yesterday, shortly after paying a courtesy visit to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at Government House, Benin City.

He said that Nigeria’s economy was more viable and rate of development faster when it operated a regional system of government.

He described governor Obaseki as a visionary governor and Edo State is fortunate to have him.

Responding, Obaseki said that given the cost of governance at the centre, restructuring is inevitable if Nigeria must make progress as a country.

He extolled the leadership quality of Chief Anyaoku, stressing that the former top scribe of the Commonwealth stands for good governance and part of the generation that did the nation proud while in office. “He is an international personality who stands for good governance and diplomatic skills,” Obaseki said.

Iran Nuclear Deal Hits New Low In Major U.S. Policy Shift

0

(Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump struck a blow against the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement on Friday in defiance of other world powers, choosing not to certify that Tehran is complying with the deal and warning he might ultimately terminate it.

Trump announced the major shift in U.S. policy in a speech in which he detailed a more confrontational approach to Iran over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and its support for extremist groups in the Middle East.

Trump accused Iran of “not living up to the spirit” of the nuclear agreement and said his goal is to ensure Tehran never obtains a nuclear weapon. He suggested Iran might be working with North Korea on its weapons programs, an accusation that has not been substantiated.

“We will not continue down a path whose predictable conclusion is more violence more terror and the very real threat of Iran’s nuclear breakout,” Trump said.

While Trump did not pull the United States out of the agreement, aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, he gave the U.S. Congress 60 days to decide whether to reimpose economic sanctions on Tehran that were lifted under the pact.

That increases tension with Iran as well as putting Washington at odds with other signatories of the accord such as Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union.

If Congress reimposes the sanctions, the United States would in effect be in violation of the terms of the nuclear deal and it would likely fall apart. If lawmakers do nothing, the deal remains in place.
