Heavy Election Spendings: MPC Likely To Hold Interest Rate

Concerned by the likely impact of the 2019 election spendings on the economy, members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) are unlikely to ease monetary policies during their two-day meeting starting today in Abuja, The New Diplomat has learnt.

This comes as the inflation rate dropped to 12.48 per cent in March to below the Central Bank of Nigeria’s benchmark Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) of 14 per cent.

Committee members are expected to also take into consideration the move by the federal government to raise the minimum wage of civil servants in the country and its attendant effects on inflation.

The MPC has consistently held that inflation was above MPR as one of the reasons for its restrictive monetary policy stance.

Albeit, with political parties expected to kick off their campaigns in earnest by the second half of this year, spending by politicians is certain to have an impact on the economy.

It was gathered that the MPC members, would also factor the impact of increased money supply on the foreign exchange market making it unlikely for CBN to change its tight monetary stance until inflation begins to move into single-digit territory.

At its last meeting in April, the MPC had maintained the MPR at 14 per cent with the asymmetric corridor at +200 and -500 basis points around the MPR and retained the Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) and Liquidity Ratio (LR) at 22.5 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

Another factor likely to come up for discussion at the MPC meeting includes the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which last month showed an expansion, just as increased capital inflows and favourable developments in the crude oil market continued to have a positive impact on the economy.

Oil prices hit $80 per barrel last week – their highest since June 2014 – against the backdrop of America’s exit from the Iran nuclear deal, falling oil inventories, and the impact of OPEC’s production cut deal.

Notwithstanding the positives of higher oil prices on Nigeria’s foreign reserves and current account balance, they also come with the risk of ballooning petrol subsidies.

However, as the MPC commences its meeting, the NBS is also due to release first quarter GDP numbers, which analysts forecast would show continued expansion.

Shehu To PDP: ‘Changing The Change’ Will Reverse Progress Under Buhari

…As nPDP Meets APC Over Looming Exodus From Party

‘Dotun Akintomide

The presidency on Sunday came down heavily on the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggesting that the party’s campaign slogan: ‘Changing the Change’ is an attempt to reverse all the progress made under the current administration and to open the door for another circle of corruption.

In his opinion piece, Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said anything that causes President Muhammadu Buhari to lose in 2019, would mean corruption has fought back

He said only discerning minds can understand this.

Shehu said even Buhari fell victim of his own war against graft in the 80s and that it was only when the authorities learnt of his mother’s death that they let him out of the net.

“Top opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members have been granting press interviews and addressing zonal political rallies talking about ‘Changing the Change’ in next year’s general elections, without defining what exactly that means.

“As the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) gears up to celebrate the completion of three years of the Buhari government at the centre on May 29, Nigerians need to be reminded of what the reversal of the achievements of this administration will amount to.

“The real meaning and cost of the ‘Changing the Change’ is that if they win the next election, they will not take us back to where we were in 2015, they will mostly reverse the progress the APC has brought to the nation.

“The main reason for the defeat of the PDP in 2015 was corruption. The present administration at the centre led by President Muhammadu Buhari has so far presented a corrupt-free image of itself.

“It has also succeeded in abolishing grand corruption at the top and as attested to by the American President Donald Trump.

“The government has significantly brought down the level of corruption in the whole country. It has, however, warned over and again that corruption was fighting back.

“Many who are discerning would have read this from President Buhari’s speech when he inaugurated the impressive new headquarters building of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) a week ago.

“He narrated how and why he was overthrown as a military Head of State in the 80s. In that speech, he said not only was he kicked out because he fought corruption, the ones who took power freed all those that he had jailed, and whatever they stole was returned to them.

“He took their place in prison and stayed there without trial for 36 months, until that day when a journalist in Benin, now in Edo, broke the story that he had lost his mother. That was when he was allowed to go home.

“The real difference between the PDP and the current APC administration is that although they mouthed a flood of rhetoric against corruption, in fact rightfully lay the claim of founding the institutions now in the forefront of fighting corruption as a government, the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), they had intended to keep them as toys, or bulldogs which teeth had been removed.

“No, they never intended that the war against corruption would be taken this far,” Shehu stated.

Meanwhile, the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) group in All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet today with the leadership of the APC over the group’s letter in which it alleged marginalisation by the party.

Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Chairman of the group, who gave hints of the planned meeting on Sunday, said the party leadership invited the group for the meeting with a collective decision that it should hold today by 2p.m.

“The last time we met here (Baraje’s house) in 2016, I told you that the way the party was going on, we were on the road to perdition.

“If you look at the letter we wrote, we never said we gave an ultimatum but that we advised them; we hinted the party because of the ongoing primaries of the party.

“Now the party has invited us, exactly on the seventh day of the letter, and they wanted us to meet that same day but because we were speaking for several leaders across the country, we told them we couldn’t meet that same day, so now they have scheduled a meeting for tomorrow (Monday) any time from 2p.m”, he said.

Baraje said nPDP members would not immediately pull out of the APC if the party fails to meet their demands.

He said that, like they did in the last administration, they would still go ahead and meet with several leaders across the country to stop what he termed impunity within the party.

The National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NSDG), a pro-democracy and non-profit organisation, says President Muhammadu Buhari will lead the 2018 edition of Democracy Solidarity Walk.

NSDG’ Convener, Mr Kletsaint Akor, who briefed newsmen on Sunday in Abuja, said that Buhari would lead the walk which would be held on May 29 at Eagles Square, Abuja.

He said that the walk, organised by NSDG in collaboration with state and non-state partners, would also be led by governors in the 36 state capitals across Nigeria.

According to Akor, the walk, which is the fourth edition with the theme “Walk for Credible, Free and Fair 2019 Elections”, is expected to attract over 1 million people nationwide.

Akor said that the aim of the exercise was to moblise Nigerians to take ownership of the 2019 electoral process through participation, enlightenment and protections of Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

“The 2018 edition of the annual Democracy Solidarity Walk will be led by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja and the governors in each of the 36 states.

“It is expected to draw participation from all Nigerian democracy stakeholders, including representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC), Trade Union Congress(TUC), political parites, National Orientation Agency, aspirants to elective political offices.

“Others expected to participate are the media, pro-democracy groups, civil society groups, development partners, students union representatives, Non-Governmental Organisations and ordinary Nigerian citizens whose best interests are served by credible elections,’’ he said.

He said that the first Democracy Walk, which took place in May 2009 to celebrate Nigeria’s first ever 10 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since independence in 1960, drew a huge participation.

Akor said that the event was marked again in 2013 and 2017 and had grown into a major component of Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day celebrations as Nigerians had realized that there was no alternative to democracy.

The NSDG convener said that adequate security would be provided by the Nigeria police and other security agencies throughout the walk.

Breaking: Omisore Defects From PDP To SDP

0

Sen. Iyiola Omisore, a former Deputy Governor of Osun, has announcement his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to Social Democratic Party (SDP).

According to NAN, Omisore, who announced his defection in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday, said he intended to contest the Sept. 22 governorship election on the platform of SDP.

He said his mission was to rescue the state from what he described as years of misrule.

According to him, the PDP in Osun is in disarray and likely to remain in prolonged political captivity over the next four years.

The statement reads partly, ” engaging and working with like-minded leadership, we have sought for an alternative platform that will assures both credible and legitimacy that will rescue Osun state from its current reckless misrule.

” Our quest for an alternative political platform is basically in pursuit of a credible political structure that would guarantee that our people enjoy the benefits of accountable leadership at the state level from now.

” Notwithstanding my enormous contributions over the past years or so to building the PDP, after very deep thought and the widest consultations with my God, my family, my supporters in and outside Osun state,

” It is with great concern that I have made a very expedient decision today, to withdraw my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the Social Democratic Party (SDP); a party that believed in a balanced, equitable and truly functional Nigeria.

“On the platform of the SDP, I shall with the support of my supporters, followers, and the electorate of the state, seek the nomination to contest for, and by His grace, be elected as the Executive Governor of Osun state on September 22, 2018”.

Omisore was Osun Deputy Governor on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD) between 1999 and 2003.

He was also elected to the Senate on the platform of PDP in 2003 to represent Osun East Senatorial District.

Imo APC Re-elects Ekeh As Party Chairman

  • Process An Illegality, Says Okorocha

Hillary Ekeh has been re-elected as Imo APC party Chairman in the just concluded APC state congress in Imo.

The party delegates who described the congress election as peaceful and successful also re-elected Deputy Chairman Mr Ugochukwu Nzekwe.

However,  Gov. Rochas Okorocha described the election as illegal claiming that there was a court injunction restraining the party from conducting the election.

Okorocha’s Chief press Secretary Mr Sam Onwuemeodo on Saturday issued a statement that the governor had obtained an injunction from an Owerri high court to stop the congress.

The party Chairman Hillary Ekeh countered the claim by saying neither he nor any member of the executive was served the injunction notice.

But the Imo police command claimed an injunction notice was served them and appealed that the congress be put on hold.

Andrew Enwerem, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) who disclosed this added that police will not allow any illegal gathering in the state.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the election, Sen Ifeanyi Araraume described the congress election as peaceful and well-coordinated.

He said there was no fracas or any form of violence during the process and commended the party chairman for his re-election.

He also lauded party delegates who in their wisdom decided to retain Ekeh as their chairman.

Asked if he has any idea of the injunction notice, Araraume said there was nothing like injunction stopping the conduct of the election.

“We the party stakeholders have no idea of any injunction, but even if there is an injunction nobody had been served so our election has to move on,” he said.

Sen Hope Uzodinma in a telephone interview told NAN that there was no hitch during the conduct of the election, adding that the congress in Imo indicated that democracy is growing in Imo.

Deputy Governor Mr Eze Madumere said the state congress was held successfully and the mandate of the people has been protected.

But the Deputy Chief of Staff to Gov. Okorocha, Kingsley Uju insisted that a faction of the party went into an unknown place to hold state congress even when a court injunction was served against the conduct of the election.

PDP’s Secret Deal For Saraki, Dogara, Tambuwal, Others

0

•Party’s Contact and Integration Committee gets two-week extension
•Jonathan’s ex-minister emerges dark horse in the race
•Ex- Gov. Boni Haruna is Turaki’s Campaign DG
•Dogara walks tight rope

WHAT’S ON OFFER TO WHO

  • KWANKWASO: State PDP structure in Kano,  governorship ticket to his preferred candidate and Senatorial seat

  • SARAKI: PDP structure in Kwara,  governorship ticket to his candidate, Senate Presidency
  • presidential primaries, ministerial ticket if he loses WAMMAKO: PDP structure in Sokoto, governorship ticket to his candidate, Senatorial seat

DOGARA: Speaker, House of Reps; Ministerial appointment

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given its Contact and Integration Committee a two-week extension to wrap up negotiations with Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are keen on switching camps.

Other bigwigs being expected are Governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) and  Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); Senators Rabiu Kwankwaso, Danjuma Goje, Aliyu Wammako, Ahmad Sani Yerima, Adamu Aliero, Sulaiman Nazif, Isa Hammah Misau,  Muhammad Muhammad, Shehu Sani and Dino Melaye; as well as a former PDP national chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje; and about 120 members of the House of Representatives.

The Nation gathered yesterday that the secret deals have dragged this long because of persistent review of positions and shifting of grounds by the personalities involved.

Highly placed sources gave our correspondent an insight into the demands of some of the intending defectors whom the PDP committee has rated as “assets” and what the PDP is willing to concede to them.

Former Kano State Governor Kwankwaso is being offered control of the state structure of the PDP and the governorship ticket to go to his candidate.

But the party does not see him going far in his presidential bid.

“The best he can get from PDP is a return to the Senate because he cannot go far in his presidential bid,” a source said.

“The party will allow him to contest its presidential primaries but he may not be the ultimate flag-bearer. Other concessions to Kwankwaso are handing over the State PDP structure to him and governorship ticket to go to his candidate.”

The party expects some backlash from the camp of a presidential aspirant, ex-Governor Ibrahim Shekarau once Kwankwaso returns to the fold.

Accordingly, it plans to placate Shekarau with a ministerial slot and ask him to “name his terms.”

Regarding Tambuwal, the source said: “Nothing can stop his desire for the presidential ticket of PDP because he is desperate for it and he has invested heavily on his ambition across the country such that none of the aspirants can match his goodwill at present.

“But his aspiration, buoyed by a prominent and PDP-inclined Northern Emir, may not translate to victory at the presidential primaries of the party.

“Certainly, he is a major contestant for the presidential ticket in PDP except that with ex-Governor (Sen.) Aliyu Wammako, he needs to work on Plan B in case he fails in his bid.

“The most visible alternative if he fails to clinch the presidential ticket is a ministerial appointment.

“A smart and slippery politician, Tambuwal has hijacked the APC structure in the state from Wammako. Learning from the need to protect the home front, Wammako’s negotiation centres on the need to control the PDP structure in Sokoto State and produce the next governor of the state having not enjoyed much from Tambuwal who was foisted on him in 2015. Wammako is said to be sure of a return to the Senate, courtesy of PDP.

“Both Tambuwal and Wammako have a game changer and grassroots politician, ex-Governor Attahiru Bafarawa (also a presidential aspirant) to contend with. It was Bafarawa who brought Wammako (popularly called Alu) into politics.

“The people of Sokoto State will be willing to offload Tambuwal who hardly stays in the state because of his shuttles for the presidency.”

The source said Saraki would have loved to be PDP’s presidential candidate but having weighed his chances; he prefers retaining “his present powerful position of President of the Senate which he seems to be enjoying.”

The PDP has assured him that the position will be retained in the North-Central, especially Kwara State.

It has also promised to grant him the control of the structure of the party in Kwara and allow him determine the governorship candidate and candidates for other elective offices.

The source added: “Saraki will determine the fate of his godson, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, who has been pleading for the senatorial slot of Kwara South District.

“Ahmed can either be a Senator or a minister since the present ministerial position given to Kwara State resides in Kwara South District.

“What will become of our former national chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje is left to Saraki to decide. Although Baraje, a sharp, patient and visionary ex-principal with depth in party politics, nurses gubernatorial ambition, but for historical reasons, the  Ilorin Emirate Council is not disposed to him.

“His gubernatorial ambition is limited and it is left to Saraki not to make him a complete loser again after he led the New PDP (nPDP) revolt in 2014.”

It was also gathered that strategists of President Muhammadu Buhari are working out a response on the security reports available to them on Saraki’s moves and PDP offers.

This includes “wooing some of the present PDP leaders in the state like Moshood Mustapha (a hitherto trusted ally of Saraki), a young and sensational governorship aspirant, Alhaji Luqman Mustapha, and Senator Gbemisola Saraki, among others.”

The plan is “not only to win Kwara State (which looks Herculean) but to defeat the Senate President in Kwara Central Senatorial District and forestall his return to the Senate.”

The PDP is said to be in a sort of dilemma on the fate of House of Reps Speaker Dogara, a Christian minority from Bauchi State as it is difficult for him to seek a Senatorial slot or be a governorship candidate.

The options for PDP on him are to “concede a return to the House of Representatives to him so he can retain the seat of a Speaker if the party has the majority or make him a minister if the opposition defeats the APC in 2019.”

The probability of Dogara becoming Speaker again is however said to be remote because the PDP wants to use the position as a bait to woo the South-West and defeat Buhari in the zone.

Sources said Dogara is adamant on a return to his seat as Speaker.

Another source, who is neck-deep in the defection talks, said: “Dogara is a major challenge for us because aside his Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency, he is a paper weight in Bauchi State politics.

“There was a time he visited his constituency with about 250 policemen and soldiers. He cannot aspire to either be a Senator or a governor in his state because he is a Christian minority.

“But if he is able to win re-election in his constituency, where he is almost a perpetual winner in the past few years, the PDP can retain him in office to appease the Middle Belt. Otherwise, the best he will get is a ministerial appointment.”

“Other Senators from Bauchi namely Sulaiman Nazif, Isa Hammah Misau, and Muhammad Muhammad who all desire automatic return to the upper chamber have been promised senatorial tickets by the PDP.

The PDP rates Senator Danjuma Goje highly and is willing to cede the party structure in Gombe State to him.

“The fact that he is in control of Gombe State politics is not in doubt,” said a second source.

“His main asset has been his excellent performance in office as governor which has remained unbroken. If not for the rebellion of some of his political godsons, APC would have produced the governor of the state in 2015.

“The PDP has taken note of his reunification of his political family and it is banking on Goje for a landslide victory. The deals with Goje include securing the PDP platform, allowing him to produce the governorship candidate, and offer of a senatorial seat.”

But Goje may be resisted by Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo who cannot leave his political fate to the senator to determine.

When Goje’s wife died and Dankwambo accompanied First Lady Aisha Buhari to commiserate with him, Goje poured invectives on the governor. It won’t be easy for him to regain control of PDP structure in Gombe from Dankwambo, both sources acknowledged.

For Senator Ahmad Sani Yerima whose political son, Governor Abdul-Aziz Yari has built a parallel platform in Zamfara State, his safe berth will be PDP.

If his deal sails through, this will be the first time he will be in PDP camp since 1999.

The top source added: “For Yarima, who has been in the Senate since 2007, he needs PDP to assert his role as the godfather of Zamfara politics.

“With his ally, ex-Governor Mahmud Shinkafi defecting from PDP to APC, the calculation of the opposition is that Yarima is a big catch.

“Yarima wants the party structure, Senatorial ticket, the right to nominate the governorship candidate, which Yari will not allow him to do.

“His problem is turning against President Buhari. Since 2007, he has sold Buhari to the people of the state and it is a dilemma to turn around and paint the President bad. The consequence of a volte face might be politically costly for him.”

Sources also told The Nation that it has not been smooth sailing for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the PDP since he returned to the party from the APC which he accused of sidelining him.

They said he rushed to defect to PDP without “proper negotiation.”

“The only thing he has benefited from his defection is the amendment to PDP Constitution which gives equal rights to new and old members, especially aspiration for presidency,” one of the sources said.

“So far, he is savouring this right to aspire for the presidency but he has since discovered that he has more hurdles to cross and more aspirants to contest with.

“He appears to be a lone ranger with PDP governors playing a hide and seek game with him.

“Whatever is the situation, PDP will allow  Atiku a symbolic shot at presidential primaries (as a veteran since 1993), put the party structure in Adamawa under  his arm pit and allow him a substantial say in the nomination of governorship and ministerial candidates. If he loses the party’s presidential ticket, he will remain a local political benefactor.

“His former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo is his albatross,” the source added.

The PDP has ex-Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola on its radar as the coordinator of the coalition against APC in 2019.

The source said: “We don’t know whether or not he is returning to PDP or staying put in CNM (Obasanjo’s inspired Coalition for Nigeria Movement) or ADC.

“Whatever it is, the PDP might grant him a Senatorial ticket or a ministerial nomination which he had expected from the current APC administration.

“But Oyinlola is reputed to be the brain behind the emergence of Senator Ademola Adeleke after the death of Sen. Isiaka Adeleke. He has been fingered in the governorship ambition of Ademola which the PDP may buy into in order to win Osun State Governorship poll.”

The scenario in Kaduna appears an arduous task for PDP where an influential politician Isa Ashiru and Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi (a politician with large following) are seeking the governorship ticket of the PDP following their sealed defection from APC.

“Both Ashiru and Hunkuyi are already trying to outwit each other for the governorship ticket. It appears Ashiru might get the slot and Hunkuyi will return to the Senate with Shehu Sani if he moves to PDP,” sources said.

The horse-trading in PDP is likely to continue over the next two weeks before the gale of defections begins.

A party source said yesterday that the PDP leadership “extended the timeline of the Committee contact and Integration Committee by two weeks.”

Asked to react to the ongoing deals by defectors, the National Publicity of PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbodiyan, who was non-committal, said: “Certainly, everybody has his interest and politics is a game of interest. They might want to find expression in our party and how to go about it.

“Our party is open and we welcome every member who has become despondent with the administration of APC. We urge all democrats wherever they may be to allow the coalition to work in order to chase away this inept government of President Buhari.”

It was also gathered that Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs in the Goodluck Jonathan Administration, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), is in the process of joining the presidential race on the platform of the PDP.

Turaki, who is considered an aspirant without blemish, is being promoted by what a member of the National Working Committee (NWC) described as a “Third Force in PDP.”

Some in the party see him as a dark horse in the race.

Turaki has already set up his campaign directorate with ex-Governor Boni Haruna as Director-General.

To assist Haruna are  ex-Military Governor of Bauchi State, Col. Habibu Shuaibu (rtd),  (Deputy DG North), and  ex-Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Steve Oru as Deputy DG (South).

“The composition of the directorate during the week suggested a bigger accord and alliance in PDP,” a member of the NWC said.

A member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), speaking on the ongoing horse-trading in the party said: “The odds favour a dark horse. Go and look at the history of past presidents and how they earned their tickets, it has been a story of dark horses.

“Ex-President Shehu Shagari least expected his nomination; ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo wanted only an eminent role as a statesman and he came out of Yola Prison to become President; ex-President Umaru Yar’Adua never aspired to be President and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was having lunch in Transcorp Hilton when Obasanjo invited him to come and be the nation’s Vice President which later propelled him into presidency with the Doctrine of Necessity.

“Some leaders of the party are of the opinion that we should ignore lousy aspirants; those who have cases with anti-graft agencies and those who have issues with leaders of the coming coalition which may give President Muhammadu Buhari a fight. Unlike APC, we will pay much attention to age factor too. No room for old men like me.

“If there are other younger elements like Turaki, we will all sit down and look at all the options. Dankwambo has age on his side but he is from the North-East. The only way to defeat Buhari is to get a presidential candidate from the North-West.

“Governor Tambuwal is favoured by age but he has a challenge bordering on the fact that Governor Nyesom Wike and some of his colleagues are desperate to force him on the party. This is undemocratic. We will leave him to contest the primaries but he might not secure the ticket.”

APC Goes To Tribunal In Kaduna State

0

All Progressives Congress (APC) has resolved to challenge the victory of PDP in four councils in the recently concluded local government elections in Kaduna state.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai said APC in Kaduna State would head to the tribunal to challenge opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

El-Rufai spoke at APC State Congress in Kaduna on Saturday and said: “We gave them what they don’t know, we gave them justice. Unfortunately, even with that justice they tried to cheat.’’

“We are going to challenge the chairmanship they said they won at the tribunal. We already have 14; for the remaining five we want to have 14 plus five.

“We can do that if we stay together, unite and work hard. We must be firm. Remember we are dealing with PDP people who are not honest.

“They don’t know the meaning of honesty, integrity, fairness, it has been taken from their vocabulary for the last 16 years.

“So, we must be prepared. We want to play fair but they don’t know the meaning of fairness,” he said.

The governor said he was confident that under the new APC executive, led by retired Air Commodore Emmanuel Jekada, the party would grow from strength to strength.

He thanked other party members that wished to contest for their positions but who in the spirit of unity and consensus, stepped down for a smooth consensus-based congress.

“I want to assure them and to say that the party and the government will not forget them, this I promise.

“I want to thank the party leaders for the smooth congress that we have had, at the ward and the local government and now the state without any problem. This is because of your maturity and commitment to the party.

” I also want to commend the party members for their performance during the local government elections.

“When we started planning for these local government elections, we made it clear that we are a party of justice.

“That we are not going to cheat in the elections. And we believe that people should be given the opportunity to choose which party they want to govern them at the local government level.

“We went the extra-ordinary length to purchase the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) so that the elections will be free and fair. We did what the PDP has never done to any other party.

“We gave them what they don’t know, we gave them justice. Unfortunately, even with that justice they tried to cheat.’’

The governor urged the party members to be prepared.

“We want to play fair, but they don’t know the meaning of fairness. We must not sleep but be prepared, mobilise to the remaining local government (areas) and make sure we are not cheated.

“But we will not cheat anybody, we want the votes of the people to count.’’

APC won 14 chairmanship seats in the council polls and PDP won four seats, while elections were rescheduled in five local government areas.

PDP on Sunday rejected the results of the elections and said it would challenge the outcome in court.

Meanwhile, at the state congress held on Saturday, APC members elected Jekada as Chairman and Malam Muhammad Shuaibu as Secretary.

Mr Frank Ikpe of the APC National Congress Committee conducted the congress elections. (NAN)

FA Cup: 3 Lessons Learnt From Chelsea’s Victory

0

Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday as Eden Hazard scored the winner with a first-half penalty. Here are three lessons from the Wembley showpiece:

Conte out-wits Mourinho

In what could prove to be his final match as Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte enjoyed a sweet moment of vindication as he won his battle with old rival Jose Mourinho.

Conte had spent much of the season locked in a vitriolic feud with United boss Mourinho and although both claimed to have buried the hatchet this week, there was no doubting the Italian’s desire to beat his nemesis.

Conte played his part in Chelsea’s success, sending them out on the front foot in the first half and then ordering them to soak up United’s pressure after the interval.

It was a risky gambit but one that produced a handsome reward.

Yet Conte is aware his future at Chelsea is precarious after 12 months of tension behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge and their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

“Our job is very difficult. Sometimes you can win but the club decides to sack you anyway,” he said recently.

Conte’s dismissal would not be without precedent — two years ago, United sacked manager Louis van Gaal within hours of winning the FA Cup.

It remains to be seen whether the Italian suffers the same fate after leading Chelsea to their first FA Cup since 2012.

For Mourinho, it was a rare disappointment on the big stage as he was beaten for only the third time in his 15 appearances in cup finals with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and United.

Criticised for adopting a cautious approach in United’s biggest games this season, Mourinho once again paid the price for being too conservative in the first half.

Mourinho had instructed Ander Herrera to stick close to Hazard, but that man-marking role left United out-numbered in midfield — and the Belgian made and scored the winner anyway.

United improved in the second half, but it was too late to stop Mourinho finishing the season empty-handed as Conte celebrated.

United stars fail to shine

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez cost United over £120 million in total transfer fees, with their combined weekly wages amounting to around £500,000-per-week.

But all that eye-watering investment bought United was the latest in a long list of underwhelming displays from their supposed superstars.

Former Arsenal forward Sanchez had scored eight goals in as many games at Wembley for club and country, but in keeping with his lacklustre start to life with United, he was largely anonymous against Chelsea.

It didn’t help that Pogba once again played for long periods as though engaged in nothing more serious than a Sunday kickabout in the park.

The duo’s lack of cohesion was encapsulated in the second half when Pogba and Sanchez fell over one after the other as the France midfielder’s miscued pass to the Chilean was intercepted to stifle a United break.

Pogba was so out of sorts that he didn’t even hit the target with a late header that could have forced extra-time.

Hazard makes his case

Hazard was the lynchpin of Chelsea’s two Premier League title triumphs over the last four seasons, but, like many of his team-mates, this had been something of a lost year for the Belgium playmaker.

The 27-year-old had sparked talk of a move to Real Madrid this week when he flexed his muscles with Chelsea’s hierarchy, insisting he wanted to see who they sign in the close-season before deciding whether to sign a new contract.

But if that was concerning for Chelsea fans, they could at least take heart from Hazard’s whole-hearted commitment to tormenting United’s over-matched defence.

Phil Jones was brutally exposed when Hazard caught him out of position with a sublime touch in the 22nd minute, accelerating away from the United defender, who responded by conceding a penalty that the unruffled Chelsea star converted with nonchalant ease.

It was only Hazard’s second goal in his last 16 appearances.

But it was his crafty contributions that kept Chelsea in control as the Belgian, who departed to a standing ovation, won the FA Cup for the first time.

…As Parallel Congresses Set Party On Collission

By John Oghojafor

In defiance to the official postponement of the rescheduled All Progressives Congress (APC), Delta State Congress to Monday 21/05/18, the Ogboru/Omo-Agege’s group purportedly held a parallel Congress on Saturday at Asaba.

Recall that the National Working Committee, NWC of the party had rescheduled the State Congress till Monday, May 21st, 2018 following alleged attempt to compromise the process by the chairman of the committee.

The national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a letter has notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its decision to reschedule its state congress for Delta state for Monday, May 21, 2018.

The party, in a letter, with reference number APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/018/12, signed by its National Secretary, Hon Mai Mala Buni and addressed to the chairman of the INEC, the APC said it found it necessary to reschedule the exercise, which was earlier scheduled for Saturday, May 19, across the country.

The letter, which also called the attention of the Director, EPPM of the INEC read “we refer to our letter reference number: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/018/12 dated 27th April, 2018, in respect of the above-mentioned subject and wish to advise that we have rescheduled the conduct of our state congresses in Delta state to Monday 21st May, 2018. We thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this regard’, it said.

Our reporter in Delta gathered that the National Working Committee of the party decided to postpone and reschedule the state congress in the state because of an alleged plan to compromise the congress committee which was uncovered.

It would be recalled that the process, right from the ward congresses, had been in danger of illegal compromises and rigging, a situation, which led to the sack of the first chairman of wards and local government congress committee to the state, Alhaji Sani Dododo.

Although leaders of the party from across the state, including seven governorship aspirants, had agreed to compiling ‘unity list’ to put an end to squabbles among various interests in the state and avert further violent activities, some elements within the party still attempted to sabotage the local government congresses in the state by conducting parallel congresses. The parallel congresses were, however, rejected.

It would be recalled that early Saturday, The New Diplomat had already reported that the determination by rival groups in Delta like many other states to forcefully annoint executives in clear parallel congresses remains the biggest threat to APC fortune in next year’s general election.

Just yesterday the Director General of President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, Rotimi Amaechi was in a closed-door meeting with the outgoing National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun in an attempt to calm strained nerves among bitter party rivals.

Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki and Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed are in serious battle for the soul of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara, with both participating in parallel state congress in Ilorin on Saturday, to elect state executives.

While the faction loyal to Saraki held its congress at the Banquet Hall opposite the Government House, the faction loyal to Lai Mohammed,  held theirs at the Arca Santa Event Hall.

Gov.  Abdulfatah Ahmed, APC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi,  Sen Shaaba Lafiaji and lawmakers representing the state at the National Assembly and state House of Assembly were present at the congress which had Saraki in attendance.

Saraki, while speaking at the congress commended members of the party for the peaceful conduct of the ward and local government congresses.

He said most of the executive members at the wards and local government level were youths, adding that “this was a sign of good things to come in 2019”.

The Senate President said: “In 2019, it will be a test for the youths to demonstrate their ability to take charge in the state,” he said.

Saraki, however, appealed to the delegates to comport themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner.

The party’s Chairman, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, commended members for their conduct during the last two congresses of the party.

The congress held at Arca Santa Hall had Moshood Mustapha, a former Special Assistant to the Senate President on Special Duties and Inter-Parliamentary Affairs in attendance.

Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, a former Commissioner for Information under the Saraki administration, was also in attendance.

Also present was a former Secretary to the State Government under the Saraki administration, Alhaji Ganiyu Cook-Olododo.

NAN reports that executive members of the two factions emerged through consensus arrangement.

While delegates at the Banquet Hall still cast their votes in spite of the fact that the candidates had no opponents, those at the Arca Santa Hall only affirmed the return of candidates.

Alhaji Moshood Bolarinwa emerged the State Chairman of the faction loyal to the minister, while Malam Abdullahi Samari was elected as the Deputy Chairman.

Others were Alhaji Abdulganiyu Saka (Secretary); Abegunde Goge (Assistant Secretary); Rahmat Abolaji (Women leader) and Samuel Isaac (Youth Leader).

Kayode Oyin-Zubair emerged Publicity Secretary of the faction, while Abiola Nasir was elected as Financial Secretary.

Wahila Sakariyah emerged as the Organising Secretary.

Threatened by the presumed fallout of the parallel congresses set to hold in some states today, Director General of President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, Rotimi Amaechi Friday, was in a closed-door meeting with the outgoing National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun in an attempt to calm strained nerves among bitter party rivals.

Ahead of the state congresses, The New Diplomat learnt party chieftains up until last night were still at loggerheads in clear supremacy battle to foist their rival factions’ executives on the party in some states.

The last minute effort to salvage the state congress notwithstanding, the tendency for crisis has been well established in Imo, Rivers, Ondo, Oyo, Cross Rivers, Anambra and Adamawa States with party stakeholders not willing to shift ground in electing parallel state executive officers.

For instance, in Delta State, the party stakeholders’ determination to forge unity between the two dissident elements it was learned, led to the postponement of the crisis day, shifting the state congress to Monday.

In another development, the rivalry in Ondo state took a different dimension inching towards an alleged felony Friday, after one of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s leading rivals, Senator Ajayi Boroffice alleged a plot to plant arms, ammunition and other illegal items in his property to silence him.

According to political pundits, it remains to be seen whether the cacophony of divisions in the party rising daily, will not affect the party’s chances of having a firm grip on the nation, as waves of defection are already tossing APC boat in different directions, necessitating the Amaechi’s meeting Odigie-Oyegun yesterday and the many of such meetings going on daily in political circles.
