The funeral rites of the late National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, entered Day Two on Friday, as his remains departed Lagos State for Moro, his country home, in Ife North Local Government Council of Osun State.

The rites had begun on Thursday with a Day of Tributes and Service of Songs which held at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The New Diplomat had reported that Odumakin died on April 2, at the Critical Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

The Chief of Staff, State of Osun, Dr. Charles Akinola, who received the body on behalf of the state government described Odumakin as ‘a leader of conscience and a fine human rights activist’.

He described the demise of the deceased as a great loss to Osun State.

His words, “We are here to do the needful, to receive remorsefully and painfully our brother, an illustrious son of the State of Osun, one of our finest — Mr Yinka Odumakin. His demise is a great loss to the nation generally but to the state of Osun in particular. Mr Governor has asked us to receive him into the state of Osun, and to escort the body of this illustrious son of ours to his final resting place. Mr Yinka Odumakin was not just a leader of conscience but the finest human rights leader in this country. He was both a nationalist and a refined birth-in-class Yoruba nationalist as well.”

Responding, the wife of the deceased, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, appreciated Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State for the reception accorded her late husband.

A Christian wake-keep programme  was held at the Origbo Anglican Grammar School, Moro.

The three-day funeral rites which started on Thursday would be concluded on April 24, when the remains of Odumakin would be committed to Mother Earth in his country home in Moro.
