The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the incumbent governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke have started trading words over the payment of pensions in Osun State.
Governor Adeleke, who is also popularly called “Dancing Governor” had on Monday claimed that his administration had paid N47bn as pensions to retirees in the state, an achievement he said had surpassed the combined records of his two immediate successors, Rauf Aregbesola and Adegboyega Oyetola, who paid N34.4bn over 12 years..
Oyetola and Aregbesola were elected on the platform of the APC. The governor said this in Oaogbo, the state capital on Monday at an event iwhere bond certificates worth N1.9bn were presented to contributory pensioners from state and local government services.
But reacting to Adeleke’s claim on Thursday, the APC described the former’s statement as falsehood and untrue.
The party which made this known at a press conference held in Osogbo, accused Adeleke’s administration of misleading the public with inaccurate figures and failing to deliver on key promises.
While addressing newsmen, the party’s Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi, maintained that Adeleke’s claim on the amount paid as pension by Oyetola was incorrect, stressing that such bogus claim demonstrates that the Adeleke administration cannot be trusted.
According to him, Governor Adeleke’s claim of offsetting a backlog of pensions and gratuities is “a blatant lie from the pit of hell” declaring that, official state documents did not support the Governor’s assertions.
“Recently, in a bid to glorify his lacklustre administration, Governor Adeleke made futile attempts to discredit his predecessors.”
He however posited that, “his administration had released N22.6 billion to settle pensions and gratuities within 24 months, which he said represented 70% of what the ‘two previous administrations paid over a 12-year period.’ This claim is entirely false,”
The party spokesperson charged the governor to prioritise transparency and accountability.
While describing Adeleke’s two-year administration as “motion without movement, Olabisi argued that, the administration had failed to make impactful efforts to lift the people out of poverty or drive financial prosperity in the state.”
