  • Attack Dishonourable — NGF

By Abiola Olawale (The New Diplomat’s Southwest Bureau)

Mr. Adamu Mohammed, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a team of specialized investigators from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to commence immediate investigation into the attempted assassination of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State by suspected herdsmen on Saturday.

The FCID team is expected to provide additional investigative support to the Benue State Police Command probing into the assassination attempt on the Governor.

The New Diplomat had reported that Ortom was attacked by suspected herdsmen, on his way to his farm, along Makurdi-Gboko highway, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday.

The IGP condemned the attack as he directed Audu Madaki, the Benue State Commissioner of Police to thoroughly investigate into the incident and ensure that all the perpetrators are brought to book.

This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Nigeria Police Spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) Frank Mba.

The statement reads: “Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday, ordered full-scale investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and reported attempt on the life of the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Chief Samuel Ortom, at his farm in the outskirts of Makurdi, the State Capital, on Saturday, 20th March, 2021. The IGP has equally directed the Commissioner of Police (CP), Benue State Command to take adequate measures towards strengthening and improving security in the State, particularly around the Governor. The IGP has also specifically directed the CP to carry out painstaking investigations into the incident and ensure the arrest and prosecution of persons indicted in the course of the investigations. Meanwhile, in order to ensure a speedy, thorough and conclusive investigation into the matter, the IGP has ordered the immediate deployment of a team of specialized investigators from the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Abuja to Benue State to provide additional investigative support to the Benue State Police Command. While calling for calm, the IGP has assured the people of Benue State and the country at large that the Force will continue to do its best in stabilizing the security situation in the country. The IGP further reiterates that the Force will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to advance the fight against violent crimes and other criminal activities across the country.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), the umbrella forum of the nation’s 36 State Governors, has also condemned the attack on the Benue State Governor, describing it as a dishonourable and shameful act.

The NGF equally called for the collective support of Nigerians in tackling the Insecurity challenges currently rocking the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State and the Chairman of NGF.

The statement reads: “The news of the broad daylight attempt to cut short the life of the Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom, is shocking and a rude awakening. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) empathizes with the Governor and the people of Benue State on this sad, cowardly, and wicked plan and vehemently condemns the act in its entirety. All hands must be on deck to uncover the identities of those involved in this heinous crime. NGF wishes to state categorically that the attempt to make Benue State ungovernable is unacceptable and will fail woefully. Only recently the brother of one of the former governors of the state was mowed down in cold blood.

“This dishonourable and shameful act of resorting to violence, for whatever reason, to eliminate citizens of Benue State by brutal means must not continue. The NGF as a platform for all the 36 Governors will continue to encourage its members to stand firm in the service of their people regardless of the evil machinations of those who do not wish Nigeria well. Evil will not be allowed to triumph over good, not in Benue and not anywhere in this country. While all governors will continue to pray for Governor Ortom, the NGF wishes to draw the attention of all evil doers that not only will they continue to fail in their wicked acts, but they will also definitely be traced and punished for their crimes, no matter how long it takes. Once again, the NGF prays for Governor Ortom and wishes him long life as his safety and that of all the people of Benue State continue to be paramount to the NGF.”
