Nigerians have commended the brilliant performance of Nigerian track and field athletes Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume as the duo clinched gold and silver medals at the 2022 World Athletics Championship.

Amusan early Monday morning broke the world record in Women’s 100 meters hurdles event running 12.12seconds to claim gold after she beat Camacho Quinn to second in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States.

She is now the first Nigerian to set world athletics record.

Amusan first ran a blistering 12:12 seconds to shatter the world record of 12:20 set by Kendra Harrison of the United States in the semi-final.

The record breaking feat also enriched Amusan’s purse with $160,000 as bonus from the organisers.

She later soared beyond the record, to wrap-up the final race in 12:06 seconds, which many thought was another record in one night, until the race director adjudged the time to be wind-aided which would not stand.

This latest feat will serve as a big consolation to Amusan after a disappointing Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she narrowly lost the bronze medal to Jamaica’s Megan Tapper, when she placed fourth.

It was also another night medal for Nigerian athlete Ese Brume as she won a Silver medal in the Women’s long jump event, with a final leap of 7.02m at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon.

Brume finished second behind German Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo, who continued her dominance in the women’s long jump by soaring to a second successive World Athletics Championship Gold with a final leap of 7.12 metres on Monday.

The silver medal, achieved with a leap of 7.02m, was an improvement for Brume, who had won a bronze medal last time out at the World Championship.

Brazil’s Leticia Oro Melo took bronze with a leap of 6.89m. Mihambo, who has been Brume’s rival in long jump, also beat the Nigerian to Gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Brume’s podium finish came just minutes after Tobi Amusan won a maiden World Championship Gold for Nigeria in the 100m hurdles event. The World Record holder was on hand to celebrate with her compatriot.

Amusan and Brume have so far won a Gold and Silver medals respectively for Team Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships, tagged Oregon 2022, in Eugene, USA.

Nigerian athlete Ruth Usoro was also in action in the women’s Long Jump where she finished 10th overall with a second round attempt of 6.52m.

Following the report, Nigerians have applauded the duo for the victory.

I don’t know her but this is a victory I share vicariously. I ‘crewed’ too this is the first time the Nigerian Anthem will be played at the World Athletics Championship.

Solomon Aghaba
