The sterling performance from the Nigerian duo of Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume at the just-concluded World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA has drawn the commendation of Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

While Tobi Amusan broke the 100m hurdles World Record in the semi-finals with an astonishing 12.12s and followed up with a (+2.5) wind-assisted 12.06s in the final, her compatriot, Ese Brume from Delta State, won a silver medal in the long jump with a 7.02m leap, behind German Olympic Champion Malaika Mihambo.

By this feat, Amusan who hails from Ogun State has now become Nigeria’s first-ever World Champion in athletics.

Reacting to the development, Senator Omo-Agege in a statement by Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, to the Deputy President of the Senate said these heartwarming victories signal the beginning of a new dawn for Nigerian athletics.

He noted that their outstanding performances at the competition are reflective of the indomitable spirit of an average Nigerian, who will leave no stone unturned in bringing glory to the country.

“Their heroic performances have brought renewed hope and made our country the cynosure of all eyes on the global map. The takeaway from these feats is that when one sets one’s mind to something, nothing is impossible.

“I feel vindicated in my conviction that if given the chance, many Nigerian women who are blessed with great potentials can further contribute towards the progress and development of our fatherland,” he said.
