The Olubadan-elect of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has vowed to make peace and security the hallmark of his reign, warning troublemakers to steer clear of the ancient city.
Speaking at his Bodija residence on Monday before a mammoth crowd of supporters, the former Oyo State governor described his path to the throne as “bumpy, filled with trials, and only made possible by the grace of God.”
“I never imagined destiny would call me to the throne at this time,” he said, recalling his shock at the news of the death of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. “I had thought Kabiyesi would still reign for another five to ten years.”
Ladoja, who began his chieftaincy journey as Jagun Balogun Olubadan on October 1, 1993, rose through the 36-step ladder of the Balogun line to emerge as the 44th Olubadan after more than 31 years of service.
He noted the coincidences of fate in his journey, pointing out that he was born in 1944 and has now become the 44th Olubadan. “It’s been a journey of patience, perseverance and grace,” he said.
Paying tribute to the late Olubadan, whom he described as “a monarch who upheld tradition with dignity,” Ladoja commended the Olubadan-in-Council for their unanimous endorsement of his nomination, pledging close collaboration with them.
The monarch-elect said he would consult widely with government and traditional institutions ahead of his coronation, adding that he had already visited his ancestral home in Isale-Osi to pray and reflect.
He appealed to indigenes of Ibadan at home and abroad to support him with prayers, promising that his reign would usher in peace, progress and prosperity.
“I seek God’s wisdom, knowledge and understanding for the enormous task ahead,” he declared. “But let me also be clear — those who plan to cause trouble will have no place in Ibadan under my reign.”
