Highlighting the ongoing political tension in Nigeria, Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Doyin Okupe and Reno Omokri, both former presidential aides, exchanged differing perspectives on the Tinubu-led administration’s handling of the Nigerian economy.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Okupe responded to Momodu’s critical remarks about President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Recall that on Thursday, Momodu wrote an open letter to Tinubu asserting that Nigeria is in “big trouble” and that the economy has “virtually collapsed.”
Continuing, he had said the “reckless propensity for wasting scarce resources” must end, thereby pleading with Tinubu to rededicate public funds to “serious development.”
Identifying signs of a “failed and careless government”, Momodu had condemned investments such as presidential jets, VP’s residential House, building ostentatious monuments, amongst others.
According to him a reduced government spending will free up funds for important research and development.
However, Momodu’s open letter has sparked a wave of reactions.
Reno Omokri, another former presidential aide, responded by stating that Momodu’s assertions were based more on assumptions and did not accurately reflect the state of the economy.
Okupe echoed Omokri’s sentiments, arguing that Momodu confused the current hardship in the country with the overall economic health and viability of the nation.
Okupe pointed to positive growth indicators as signs of an “imminent recovery” for the Nigerian economy.
In response, Momodu maintained that Nigerians are experiencing unprecedented economic hardship.
He questioned why Tinubu has become an “idol” for Okupe and Omokri despite what he called the administration’s “reckless spending.”
In response, Okupe charged Momodu with manipulating details regarding his assessment of Tinubu’s administration.
