Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has signed the state’s Anti-open grazing bill into law, nine days after it was passed by the State House of Assembly.
Also assented to, today, is the Urban and Regional Planning Bill which was passed by the House of Assembly shortly before members proceeded on their annual recess last month.
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori in company of the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ochor Ochor, the Clerk of the House, Lyna Ocholor Esq and other principal officers of the legislature were present at the brief ceremony.
Also present at the ceremony which took place at the Government House in Asaba, was the Deputy Governor Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, Secretary to the State Government Chief Patrick Ukah, Chief of Staff, Rt Hon Festus Agas amongst others.
It would be recalled that the Anti-Open grazing bill which was titled: ‘A Bill for a Law Prohibiting Open Grazing, Indiscriminate Breeding, Rearing and Marketing of Livestock in Delta State’ was unanimously adopted and passed following a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon Ferguson Onwo.
The New Diplomat learnt that the Anti-Open grazing Bill assented to by the governor today, will prohibit the bearing of firearms, either licensed or otherwise, by residents or individuals in the State. It also seeks to address the arbitrary rearing and movement of livestock in the State.
It was also gathered that the Urban and Regional Planning Bill will provide a legal framework for the proper planning and even development of the entire state.
