No fewer than three people have been feared dead on Thursday, November 10, 2022, after a section of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State collapsed.

The New Diplomat gathered that the three persons were construction workers at the site of the stadium.

It was also learnt that scores of people have sustained various degrees of injuries and have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital to receive treatment.

The collapsed building is a two-storey building under construction in preparation for the 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) to be hosted at the stadium from November 28, 2022.

Many structural engineers have previously expressed concerns over the speed at which the construction was going, doubting the integrity of the buildings under construction.

This is not the first time that facilities in the stadium will be collapsing.

On two different occasions within six months timeframe, facilities in the newly completed stadium have collapsed, causing critics of the incumbent administration in the state led by
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to question the quality of the job done by the contractor of the project.

The first was the collapse of a big overhead water tank near the swimming pool of the stadium, which ended up destroying vehicles that were under the tank. The second was the collapse of the scoreboard in the stadium complex.

Some participants at the championship hosted in August recently had complained about the quality of some of the facilities at the stadium.

The recent collapse happened just a few weeks after the Minister of Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, gave it a pass mark, saying that the facilities were 80% ready for use.

Dare who spoke after inspecting the facilities said he was highly impressed with the level of work done by the various contractors.

Though the Minister had lots of good things to say about the building, the recent event has brought to light the poor work done on the facility.
