As Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence on October 1, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, says he has directed that stringent and massive security measures be put in place across the nation.
Egbetokun declared that the directive is to create a safe and conducive environment for citizens across the country.
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
In the statement, Adejobi also disclosed that the IGP has ordered the deployment of adequate human and tactical resources to enable a maximum level of security and a seamless celebration of Independence Day.
The statement reads in part: “Additionally, the IGP has directed all personnel deployed for various operations during the celebrations to be courteous and firm in their engagements with members of the public.
“The Inspector-General of Police also felicitates with Nigerians as we commemorate our independence anniversary, noting that Nigerians are urged to reflect on the journey, triumphs and challenges that have shaped our nation, honouring the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the generations that have contributed to our nation’s growth, unity and progress.”
This is coming on the heels of moves by some Nigerians who have vowed to hit the streets on the country’s Independent Day, October 1, in disapproval of the current economic situation and hardship in the country
According to the organisers, the October 1 demonstration is a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protest, which took place from August 1 to 10.
The group explained that the FCT protest would be held at Eagle Square, the same venue as the Independence Day celebration parade, while the Lagos protest would take place at the Ikeja Under Bridge.
