Rivers United, a Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) side has announced the departure of its long-serving manager, Stanley Eguma.

According to the official club’s statement on its social media account on Saturday, the club made the decision to part ways with the veteran coach, ending Eguma’s eight-year marriage with Port Harcourt-based outfit based on its decision to advance a different goal.

The statement read: “The Management of Rivers United FC announces the termination of Coach Stanley Eguma’s appointment as Technical Manager,”.

The statement added: ”This decision is in pursuit of a new direction aimed at achieving the club’s objectives and goals.”

Joined the defunct Dolphins in 2008, Eguma is the longest-serving coach in the Nigerian topflight league. He was appointed manager, when the Rivers state government merged Sharks Football Club and Dolphins Football Club into Rivers United in 2017.

Eguma led the club to NPFL glory, winning its 2020/21campaign and he also took them to a second-place finish in 2016.

On the continent, Eguma led Rivers United to both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The statement read further “We express our gratitude to Coach Eguma for his dedicated service to the club and wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” the statement continued, acknowledging Eguma’s contributions before confirming the appointment of his replacement.”

Evans Ogenyi has been appointed on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League season
Rivers United are seated on eighth position on the league log with 47 points.
