Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, (LP) in the 2023 presidential elections and two term former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has refuted claims that he plans to be a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 presidential elections.

Obi said his clarification became necessary following misinterpretations of his comments during a recent interview.

In a detailed statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Obi expressed surprise at what he called the distortion of his remarks. He emphasized his dedication to the Labour Party and stressed that he is not desperate for any political office.

Obi had said: “It would be recalled that I remain open to collaboration with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress, provided their intentions are not centred on state capture.”

However, Obi stated that he was surprised to note that his position has been greatly misconstrued and misrepresented in the media.

He added: “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.”

Obi further reiterated his focus on the immediate challenges facing Nigerians, adding, “I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.”

He clarified his position on political collaborations, stating, “When I was asked about collaboration, I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.”

Obi reiterated that he remains fully committed to the Labour Party, stressing that anyone seeking collaboration must reveal their true intentions. He stressed: “For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone, and it’s unequivocal.”
