Radical human rights activist and legal luminary, Femi Falana (SAN) has demanded an immediate investigation of the importation of petroleum products into the country, stressing that the move has become imperative and urgent.

This is as the Radical lawyer described the importation of fuel as a “scam” in the country.

Falana, who spoke with the press expressed concerns that Nigeria keeps spending several million on the refineries and still yet to have any tangible results.

He stated: “It is high time the importation scam was investigated. I am not talking about the joke that is going on about in the National Assembly. The media must help civil society organisations to expose the fraud.

“Once the government begins to speak about affordability and sustainability in response to growing queues at filling stations, there are problems.”

Falana’s call comes amid reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) owes petrol suppliers $6 billion in debt.

The NNPCL on Sunday also admitted the company’s “significant debt to petrol suppliers”, saying it poses a threat to the sustainability of fuel supply.
