The President, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajero has vowed to shut down States and companies owing pensioners.

Ajero who disclosed that most States government bluntly refused to pay the backlog of arrears-owned pensioners, noted in dismay that most of the retired workers died while waiting for their money.

He stated that over 70% of retirees relied on their pension to survive and buy drugs to take care of themselves as ageing comes with different challenges.

The NLC President disclosed that at the moment, the Abia State government is currently owing pensioners 22 months arrears.

He disclosed that the NLC has put machinery on motion to shut down the state.

The President also noted in dismay that the state is yet to implement the ₦30,000 minimum wage since it was introduced by the federal government.

Ajero also disclosed that States that are financially vibrant like Rivers State are owing about 15 months pension arrears.

The President lamented that inspite of the glaring hardships in Nigeria, Anambra State government still pays a pantry sum of ₦333.45k as monthly payment to pensioners.

He assured that the Labour movement must work hard to curb the excesses of states government in this regard.

Ajero stated that as Workers’salaries are being reviewed, so that of the Pensioners will be reviewed as well.
