Nigerians have expressed sadness online after the Super falconets fell short in their first game of the knockout stage against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Under-20 Women’s World Cup

The falconets of Nigeria were sent packing out of the tournament after a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands on Monday August 22, 2022.

Nigeria won all three of their group games, including an opening-day shocker against France.

The super falconets were handed a quarterfinal tie against the Netherlands, who finished second in their group.

Nigeria were pegged back early in the game, as an eighth-minute goal from Zera Hilswit gave the Dutch ladies the lead.

The Super Falconets tried to pull one back after falling behind, but they were unlucky, as strikes from Abiodun Deborah, Mercy Idoko, and Flourish Chioma failed to beat the Dutch goalkeeper

Unfortunately, Ziva Henry capitalised on a mistake from the Nigerian defense and scored for the Netherlands in the 33rd minute to make it 2-0.

Nigeria kept pushing to get back into the game, but all their efforts amounted to naught. The Super Falconets thought they were given a lifeline when the referee awarded them a penalty in stoppage time.

However, the decision was overturned after a VAR review. The Dutch team held on to ensure they ran out with a 2-0 victory.

Football fans have taken to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction following the exit of the Super Falconets  in the tournament.

❌ Falconets are out of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup as 2 defensive errors led to Netherlands only shots on target and two goals to Dutch to reach the semifinals where they will face Spain.

Not a great weekend for Naija Sports 😐

These girls should learn to play together as a team. They should perish the idea of I want to score, I want to score. We’ve been dominating the game so far though. #NGANED
