Many Nigerians on social media have continued to berate the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari for editing and later deleting a post where he had refuted allegations he was involved in a mega fraud masterminded by an international fraud kingpin, Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi.

Kyari, who reacted to the allegations on his official Facebook account denied the report by the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which alleged that he received N8m from Hushpuppi to arrest and detain one Chibuzo Vincent. Chibuzo had allegedly threatened to expose a $1.1m fraudulent deal that swindled a Qatari businessman.

In the post, Kyari denied receiving money from Hushpuppi, saying the exposed Instagram celebrity only called his office about two years ago that somebody in Nigeria “threatened to kill his family here”.

“Later, he saw some of my native clothes and caps on my social media page and he said he likes them and he was connected to the person selling the clothes and he sent about N300,000 directly to the person’s account. The native clothes and caps (5 sets) were brought to our office and he sent somebody to collect them in our office,” Kyari had said.

Few days after, Kyari edited the initial post to say he never demanded for money from Hushpuppi, while noting that he only helped the fraud kingpin recover a sum of N8million.

The post reads, “Nobody demanded or collected any money from Abbas Hushpuppi. He can be interviewed publicly in the presence of the world media by the people holding him to confirm this,” Kyari wrote in the new post.

“He also called for another case in June 2020 and complained about a financial transaction with a second person whom he said his friend sent 8 million naira to and pleaded for his friend’s money to be recovered. He sent transaction slips and other evidences to prove their case against the person.

“All these can be verified from the Hushpuppi since he is still in custody. And it can be verified from person who collected 8 million naira from Hushpuppi’s friend whom they complained about is alive and is in Nigeria.”

Checks on Wednesday revealed that Kyari has now deleted the entire post.

Following the action, Nigerians have lambasted the suspended DCP for not displaying intelligence in handling the indictment by the US while making his post on the social media platform.

Here are some of the reactions harvested from Twitter;

“As at last night, DCP Abba Kyari had edited his Facebook statement a record 12 times. He edited out his role as a Kaftan plug for Hushpuppi and wrote that he’s a mere debt collector; a more incriminating role. This morning, he deleted the entire post. This man isn’t smart at all.”(@Gamba Kanda).

“For a supposedly intelligent cop, I’m actually surprised except maybe the hype was overrated”(@phoenix)

“The first Facebook post is ‘understandable’ out of the shock of  being indicted. How come there is no lawyer to advice him to take down the post in the first place? Instead he kept editing and incriminating himself. Really ashamed for my country😢 “Head of Intelligence unit”(@talkingdrum).

“So let me get it. Abba Kyari was head of IG “Intelligence Response Team”- an elite group of supposedly intelligent police officers. Yet the FBI investigated this clown for 1year and he had ZERO clues. Again I’m asking: How did he ever head an elite IG Intelligence Team?”(@Drfunmilayo)
