Despite assurances by the newly sworn in Acting Inspector General of Police (Ag. IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, the security situation in Nigeria continues to worsen as over 50 people were reportedly slaughtered by armed men and 170 houses razed in Izombe in Oguta, Imo state, South East Nigeria.

The new acting IGP had earlier likened himself to a roaring lion ready to devour criminals, and at the weekend, reassured Nigerians of improved security.

The recent massacre has triggered reactions from Nigerians of diverse extraction who wondered how such magnitude of killings could occur without any immediate response from security operatives.

It was even more ironic as the immediate Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya has only days ago declared unequivocally that he had injected professionalism into the Nigerian Army and decimated the enclaves of fulani herdsmen in the north and other regions.

The national President, Ohaneze Youth Council (OYC), Mr.Igboayaka Igboayaka recalled all these while lamenting the spate of killings in the entire South East region.

However, there seems to be a concensus of opinion on the frightening nature of the security challenges confronting the nation as The New Diplomat investigation on media platforms revealed.

Excerpts;

Subhanallah:

What are we turning into ? From Bornu to Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Plateau now Imo. We the ordinary Masses should come together and face the common enemy. It’s now clear that it is not about Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo. Someone is working hard to depopulate Nigeria.

Rufai Oseni @Arise TV:

The three tiers of government must work assiduously to improve on the nation’s poor economy that rendered our youths jobless. Hence they are easily harvested to fight for Boko Haram and other insurgent groups.

Abati @Arise TV:

Well the outgoing Chief of Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya declared that he built professionalism into the Nigerian Army. We are yet to see that, going by reported insecurity everywhere. Though he admitted that he had not be able to check the menace of Crude Oil thieves or bunkering in the Niger Delta region. I’m not going to judge him on this. It’s left for the soldiers and time to do so.

WarriBoy:

What’s this country turning into anyway? On daily bases, Nigerians are killed in their ancestral homes. Yet the killers move freely.

Tony Base @kogi

The killers are not spirits. To say the least, they perpetrated the heinous crime with impunity because of the powerful persons behind them.

Onwuegbezie @enugu:

It’s obvious that politicians in the South East are responsible for massive killings in the region. Pointless to say that fulani herdsmen are now indigenes of Ebonyi State, courtesy of the immediate past Governor, Dave Umahi. Already, the current Governor of Imo state, Hope Uzodima is trailing the dirty footsteps of Umahi. Hence these frequent killings everywhere. It’s all about tussle for legitimacy.

Abah @Taraba:

We cannot continue like this as a nation. We must put aside our religious and ethnic differences to confront these foreign Fulani monsters masquerading as herdsmen.

Osainde @P/H:

The killers do not know tribe or religion. Hence we must work together to chase them away from our ancestral homes.
