As expectations are raised every passing moment over Saturday, tomorrow’s presidential poll, the Lagos State police command have disclosed that no fewer than 22,000 officers were deployed to work with the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and maintain orderliness.

The Lagos Assistant Commissioner of Police, Oludotun Odubana who made this disclosure on Friday, said the officers were deployed to man the over 13,000 polling units in the state.

The Lagos Police Boss who noted that the number of officers deployed for the election in the state, remains a far cry to the polling units.
He said it was in recognition of the shortfall that officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Civil Defence Corp, Immigration, Custom, Federal Road Safety and Fire Service were all detailed to support the police in maintaining peace and orderliness during and after the election.
Odubana also stated that affected officers have been properly trained with other stakeholders as leaders of market women, students’ Union traditional rulers and road transport workers.

He assured that the training which was organised by INEC, educated the officers on what would be expected of them.
The Assistant Commissioner disclosed that by Saturday, tomorrow morning the “no movement restriction order” would be enforced accordingly as armed officers would be on ground to keep the peace in the polling units.

He said that only accredited personnel and those on essential duties would be allowed free movement during the election exercise.

He disclosed that INEC has begun movement of sensitive materials to the various polling units, adding that over 250 Mobil Policemen were detailed to accompany the trucks laden with the materials to the different local government areas in the state.
Odubana Said the officers would watch over the INEC sensitive materials until they will be distributed tomorrow morning to the various wards and polling units.

The Assistant Commissioner dismissed the fear of the officers being compromised, adding that it was in the recognition of that that prompted the Police DIG in the zone to reshuffle officers in the state.

He said that virtually all the officers deployed for this election are not known the people, adding that even Divisional Police Officers were equally affected by the reorganisation exercise.

His words:” in order to ensure transparency, officers were redeployed outside the state even DPOs. The officers would be guarded by the electoral laws. They are already armed with the rules and guardiance.”

Odubana further disclosed that the deployed officers were adequately trained on how to manage people living with disabilities in order to ensure that they were disenfranchised during the election.

He the officers are aware that there are separate queues for them and must watch out for such persons.
