The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on citizens to celebrate Nigerian doctors for their “irreplaceable” role in society as the association is set to kick off festivities to commemorate the 2021 Physician’s Week in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, on Sunday.

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, will grace the occasion as the event’s Chairman and Keynote Speaker on the theme ‘Nigeria in the Covid Era and Beyond: Health System Strengthening for National Security and Prosperity,’ is the topic of this year’s celebrations.

According to the NMA Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom, Dr Nsisong Asanga: “It is important that Nigeria need Health Systems strengthening more than ever for collective prosperity and security as a people. Nigeria is faced with a lot of struggle and better health care system we will be fit for the challenges.”

Dr Asanga also called on all Nigerians to celebrate all the medical doctors in Akwa Ibom, in Nigeria and in the diaspora.

“Doctors are irreplaceable part of the community. Its a sad thing if you let someone else take your doctors. So if our community should allow people to take our best brains then I hope during this Physician’s Week, we will have a rethink and reinvest in our doctors to make them happy to serve in the country.”

Some of the week highlights include, Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 10th October2021, Press Conference, Courtesy visit, and Young Doctor’s Day.

There will be Jumat Service on 15th and Free Medical Outreach in Ikot Abasi sponsored by HENSEK Construction Company.

The medical practitioners called for other individuals and corporate bodies to partner with NMA to deliver free medical outreach to their communities with no huge spending but drugs and replaceable kits.

Beside the former President of Nigeria, the opening ceremony with have Gov. Udom Emmanuel as Chief host, NMA National President, Professor Innocent Ujah and Akwa Ibom State NMA chapter President, Dr Sylvester Udoh as Chairman, Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
