Amid escalating pressure generated by Nigerians’ quest to usher in a new dawn, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alerted the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu on the imminent danger of declaring falsified presidential election results.
Obasanjo who applauded President Mohammed Buhari’s unflinching determination to leave a legacy of free, fair, transparent and credible elections, stated that the good and noble intentions have been truncated by INEC Staff who have compromised the system.
He lamented that inspite of the humongous amount of money spent by the INEC to procure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAs and Server that would allow the immediate transmission of results from the polling units.
“It’s no secret that INEC officials have allegedly compromised the system and revert to manual transmission in order to manipulated and doctored the results .
“The INEC Chairman may claim ignorance but he cannot fold his hands and do nothing when he knows that the election process has been corrupted, and most of the results that are brought outside the BVAs and Server are not true reflection of the will of Nigerians who have made their individual choice.
“At this stage, we do not need wittingly or unwittingly to set this country on fire with the greed, irresponsibility and unpatriotic act of those who allegedly gave money to INEC officials for perversion and those who collected the blood money.
“Let me appeal to the Chairman of INEC if his hands are clean, to save Nigeria from the looming danger and disaster waiting to happen,” he said.
The Elder Statesman posited that if INEC Chairman can postpone elections four days to the election, “he can do everything to rectify the errors of the last two days-no BVAs, no result to be acceptable, no upload through Server, no result to be acceptable.”
He advised Professor Yakubu to use this opportunity to mend his character and reputation for posterity sake.
Obasanjo appealed to the President Buhari to cancel elections that do not pass credibility and transparency test.
In this regard, the former president urged the inauguration of a committee of iINEC Staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association to look into what Must be done to have hitch free election next Saturday.
He, however, urged Nigerians to be patient as nobody at this stage can toy with the future of the country.
