Trailing the failure of ECOWAS-initiated peace talks with Niger Republic’s new military junta, the Sahelian country has cut off diplomatic ties with Nigeria, France, Togo and the US.

ECOWAS had issued a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum ousted in a military coup last week, to avoid possible confrontation with the junta.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu sent a high-powered delegation to the country to meet with the coup leaders, on Thursday.

But the delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) only met with representatives of the junta.

“The functions of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger” to France, Nigeria, Togo and the United States are terminated,” Radio France International quoted one of the putschists as having said on national television.
