…Inaugurates Multi-million Naira Endowment Fund
Billionaire politician cum international legal luminary, Hon. Ned Nwoko has been bestowed with the Honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State.
The event which took place, Sunday on the occasion of the 2nd Convocation ceremony of the Institution, was attended by the Chancellor/Visitor of the University, President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by the Minister of State for the Ministry of Education, the Pro-Chancellor, the Uvwie monarch, representatives of oil and gas companies, members of the business community, vice chancellors from other universities among other dignitaries.
In announcing the renowned philanthropist as a beneficiary of the coveted award, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Akaehomen Akii Ibhadode, said that the University governing council had found Hon. Prince Nwoko worthy, adding that his track record over the years in promoting education and academic excellence stood him out for the award.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Nwoko thanked the university authority for finding him worthy to be bestowed with such high honour, saying that the award will spur him to put more effort in the promotion of educational development.
He informed that his initiative has culminated in the setting up of the first University of Sports in Nigeria, adding that he will reach to the management of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun for necessary assistance just ad he said that the new specialized institution will take off in September, 2019.
The Prince of the Niger Delta as he is fondly referred to, used the occasion to inaugurate an education endowment fund for first class graduates of FUPRE, to the tune of N1 million each for the 20 graduates who graduated with first class honours in various disciplines.
Nwoko assured that the endowment fund was a continuous exercise, adding that in subsequent years, first class graduates of the institution will benefit from the fund no matter the number.
According to him, the endowment fund was his way “of furthering his love for education.”
