  • To Reconvene Sept 6th

By Abiola Olawale

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday held a meeting which was inconclusive as they are set to meet again next month.

The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, convened the meeting on Wednesday, following threats by the ASUU to embark on a nationwide strike over an alleged inability of the Federal Government to meet its demands.

During Wednesday’s meeting, a joint committee comprising ASUU, the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Ministry of Labour was set up to escalate the implementation of all residual issues, especially those with presidential directives.

This was made known by Mamman who addressed the press after the meeting in Abuja.

According to him, the government is ready to work with ASUU to iron out modalities to address the contentious issues.

He also revealed that another meeting would be held on September 6.

The New Diplomat reports that this is coming after university lectures threatened to down tools over unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, part-time and adjunct appointments due to the application of the IPPIS.
