As yearning for nationwide protests set for August 1 intensifies, netizens have refused to welcome the recruitment alert of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) with open arms.

The state-owned national oil company, in its verified post on X (formerly known as Twitter), had revealed its readiness to recruit young Nigerians, asking interested candidates to apply on its site.

This announcement is coming amid public outcry against the inflationary situation occasioned by rising costs of daily commodities in the country.

“We are hiring. Are you passionate about building an exciting career at NNPC Limited? Please visit careers.nnpcgroup.com to apply,” the recruitment post read.

Reacting to the post, Netizens have since accused the NNPCL of hypocrisy, fraud, and an attempt to distract from the protest.

A popular X user named @High_Chief said it was a plan to distract the youth from staging the much acclaimed protests. He said, “Don’t waster your Time. Non of the people applying for the job will get it.

“NNPC wants just to remove your minds from their Malta scandal and also the protest. Don’t waste your time.”

According to other comments, the opportunities are for the children of the rich, not for those of the poor.

An X user simply identified as Kings said, “They are now bringing out the juicy jobs they believe are entitled to them and their families because Nigerians say they cannot longer accept the rubbish. I wish we did this earlier.”

@chinasaawo however expressed hope amidst doubts, saying that “I will love to see the number of ordinary Nigerians that will get this job.”

Also, unveiling his disappointment at the company’s stature and knowledge of the norms, @commodore_ranky said that the company lacks the vision to maintain and uphold the required standards of running a seamless activity on the site:

“We know what we are doing in this country. This unprecedented traffic has been a norm in your recruitment exercise over the years. Are you saying the biggest labour of O&G can not develop a website that will be free from surge during process like this? This is a shame TBH”
