……says democracy has come to stay in Africa

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has urged the government of the Republic of Niger to continue to collaborate with the government of Nigeria to curtail terrorism and work out ways to resettle victims displaced by the activities of the insurgents.

The Speaker said this when he received a delegation from the Nigerien Parliament – led by its president, Ousseini Tinni – which was on a working visit.

Dogara assured the lawmakers that the Nigerian government is doing everything necessary to ensure that citizens displaced by the crisis are returned back to their homes as soon as possible.

He also commended the Nigerien government for its assistance in tackling terrorism through its military and other forms of support, while expressing optimism that with the success recorded so far, Boko Haram will soon be unable to operate at all.

“I want to commend the president of Nigeria and that of Niger over exemplary leadership in equipping our armed forces to handle the situation.

“Though not completely defeated, very soon, with cooperation like this between us, we will be able to push them out of our international borders.”

The Speaker advised the lawmakers to always put the people first in their actions so as to sustain democracy and to bring benefits to them.

Earlier, president of Nigerien parliament, Ousseini Tinni, said they were on a working visit/study tour of the Nigerian parliament, while also seeking a joint visit to the multinational troops stationed in Lake Chad to give them moral support for their efforts in fighting Boko Haram.

Among other things, Tinni also sought concerted efforts by both parliaments to enact laws that will help to improve the fight against terrorism in their respective countries and the African continent.
