A group of Military officers in the Republic of Benin has declared the overthrow of President Patrice Talon’s government, seizing control of state television and suspending all constitutional institutions in the West African nation.
The move was announced early Sunday, December 7, 2025.
The group of soldiers identifying themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR) appeared on national television to make the formal announcement.
They also announced that the president and all political officeholders have been effectively removed.
All state institutions were also dissolved.
Patrice Talon, Benin Republic president, has been on the saddle since 2016 and has promised to leave office in April 2026 after the presidential poll.
