  • Expresses Concern over alleged lack of patriotism among Nigerians

By Tolúlopé Olátúnjí

Human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome has commended the efforts of President Bola Tinubu-led administration for reinstating the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”, despite not being a supporter of the government.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, on Thursday lauded the government’s decision, describing it as a unifying move for the country.

“I am not a fantastic fan of the government, but if there is one thing I think they have gotten right, and I applaud them for it, it is the reintroduction of this national anthem,” Ozekhome stated.

The reintroduction followed the passage of the National Anthem Bill 2024 by the National Assembly, which was subsequently signed into law by President Tinubu. The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians questioning the necessity of reverting to the old anthem.

Ozekhome however defended the move, emphasizing its potential to foster national unity. “The reintroduction of the old national anthem will cement us together,” he said.

He acknowledged the announcement of a public hearing on the anthem change but noted he was not specifically invited.

He said:”If you’re called, you should go and participate. If you don’t participate, you should not cry later.”

Ozekhome also expressed concern over perceived lack of patriotism among some Nigerians and expressed hope that the old anthem would help restore national pride. He mentioned that the anthem’s reintroduction was a recommendation of the 2014 National Confab.

It would be recalled that on the part of President Tinubu, while defending the reintroduction, described it as a priority of his administration. He stated that during a meeting with the leadership of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the Presidential Villa last Thursday. “If the National Assembly makes a law, I’ve got to obey that law, or we disagree openly and close the chapter,” Tinubu said.
