The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Matthew Kukah, has issued a strong message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu about the state of the country’s economy.

The Bishop called on the President to immediately address the food crisis in the country, pointing out that several Nigerians are suffering.

Kukah, who spoke during the unveiling of the Progressives Institute set up by the All Progressives Congress (APC), also appealed to Tinubu to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reduce the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as fuel.

According to him, the recent increment in pump prices of fuel is improper and unacceptable.

He said: “Nigerians are hungry and something urgent needs to be done.

“A girl was asked, which party are you? APC, LP or PDP? She said ‘I am hungry’, so we Nigerians are hungry. You have to find a way of reducing the price of fuel.

“Unless democracy is anchored on a sound foundation, we will be building on sand. I am concerned about the quality of democracy in Nigeria. We need to fix the problem with democracy in Nigeria.”

This comes as Nigeria is currently battling high inflation, with food inflation pegged at over 40 per cent by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The recent increase in the price of petrol from around N585 per litre to almost N900 per litre has also sparked uproar in the country, with many calling for a reversal.
