The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez has declared three days of national mourning in the country in honour of the death of the iconic sporting hero, Diego Armando Maradona.

Also the European football body, UEFA is to honour Maradona with a minute of silence before Wednesday’s Champions League games.

The Argentine president, Fernéndez, who spoke to a local newspaper, Clarín, said in a brief statement that he was “incredibly sad” over the death of Maradona.

“I was working with [Santiago] Cafiero [the head of the cabinet] when they told me. I can’t believe it. I’m distraught. It’s the worst news an Argentina fan could receive. We loved him. I’m trying to talk to his family. We’ll see. There is so much sadness,” said the president.

According to en.as.com, the presidential order announcing the official period of mourning will be published in the State’s Official Bulletin, to be followed by tributes all over the country to what many consider to be Argentina’s greatest player of all time.

Also, the official place of abode of the president, the Casa Rosada, is to be made available for the family of Maradona, in order to organise a state funeral for the player.

The New Diplomat, hours ago, had reported that Maradona, one of the greatest football player and iconic men to have ever played the round leather game died at the age of 60.

The football legend reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence in Tigre on Wednesday before giving up the ghost.

Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in eulogizing Maradona who brought unbelievable soccer artistry to the round leather game including the famous and controversial ‘hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World cup match, winning the cup for his country.

Brazilian great Pele tweeted: “What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend. There is still much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to family members. One day, I hope we can play ball together in the sky.”

Argentina Declares Days Of Mourning

Juventus and Portuguese star, Cristiano Ronaldo tweeted: “Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius. One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten.”

Barcelona and Argentine legend, Lionel Messi wrote: “A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

“I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
